A 21-year-old junior hockey player was identified as a victim of the Lake Louise avalanche

The Rocky Rams Junior Hockey team has identified 21-year-old Cale Stecyk as the man killed in the Lake Louise landslide last weekend.

The Red Deer, Alta., native was with two other people when they walked through a closed area at Lake Louise Ski Resort Saturday afternoon. The area known as the West Bowl was closed due to avalanche risk.

AvalancheCanada says on its website that the size 3 avalanche triggered by the skier was 200 meters wide and 550 meters long, with a crown depth of 40-50 centimeters.

According to Avalanche Canada, a size 3 avalanche “can bury and destroy a car, damage a truck, destroy a small building or snap a few trees.”

Two out of three people were buried in the avalanche, the police said. One of them was only partially buried and got out, but Stecyk was buried completely. After he was pulled from the snow, rescue efforts were made, but he did not survive.

The co-captain played three seasons at Rocky Mountain House in Atlas. team.

Cale touched all of our lives for the better and we were proud to be a part of his life during his Jr. Hockey career. Her infectious smile made a lasting impression on all who knew her and she will be deeply missed by all her friends and family.

The Rams organization would like to thank everyone for the love and support we have all received from the hockey community and friends and family at this time.

The ski patrol quickly responded to the emergency call, and the RCMP and Parks Canada Rescue Dogs also responded to the call.

“Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” the resort said in a statement.

“This is also a serious reminder of the dangers of entering closed terrain.”

According to the resort, both Parks Canada and EMS were contacted and an avalanche rescue team was dispatched to the scene.

AvalancheCanada tweeted a warning Friday not to be fooled by the warm temperatures at lower elevations, noting that winter avalanche problems remain in alpine areas.
