CHAPEL HILL, NC — Despite dropping a doubles point, the UNC women’s tennis team (32-1) defeated the No. 16 Florida Gators (18-8) 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Today’s win over Florida set a new single-season home run record with 18 home runs during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
After falling 3-6 on doubles court two, Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran won 6-3 on the third court and forced a double point decision on the first court. After a back and forth battle Fiona Crawley and Abbey Forbes fell 6-7. Florida went into singles with a 1-0 advantage.
The Tar Heels started the singles game 0-1. Reese Brantmeier dominated the first court, won 6-3, 6-1 and tied the match. He was followed by Reily Tran’s go-ahead five to give North Carolina its first lead of the night. The Tar Heels ended the Gators’ season with back-to-back wins Anika Yarlagadda and Fiona Crawley fields six and one.
Carson Tanguilig and Elizabeth Scotty’s the matches were abandoned.
North Carolina heads to Orlando for the NCAA Championship for the twelfth time in program history and the eighth time in the last ten seasons.
