The USA beat Hungary and Canada beat Slovenia in the hockey world

TAMPERE, Finland (AP) The United States had to come from behind in its 7-1 victory to win the second-tier hockey world championship in Hungary on Sunday.

Canada had to do the same en route to a 5-2 win over Slovenia, another recent promotion to the top division.

Nick Bonino scored two goals for the Americans and Rocco Grimaldi scored a goal and two assists in their A group game at Nokia Arena in Tampere.

Americans Alex Tuch and Nick Bonino answered Istvan Sofrons’ goal to get back into the game in the opening period.

Bonino added another in the middle period on the power play, and Cutter Gauthier made it 4-1 with a shot between the pads of goaltender Dominik Horvath.

Connor Mackey, Grimaldi and Luke Tuch each scored in the third period.

MacKenzie Weegar had a goal and two assists in another three-point game for the Calgary Flames defenseman, while Michael Carcone and Jack McBain had a goal and an assist for Canada.

After Jan Drozgs’ goal gave Slovenia the lead in the opening period, Canada responded with a three-goal second period in Group B in the Latvian capital, Riga.

Carcone equalized with a wrist shot 1:13 into the frame, Pierre-Olivier Joseph gave Canada a 2-1 lead and Milan Lucic doubled the advantage on the power play.

Weegar and McBain each had one out in the third before Drozg cut the deficit to 5-2 in the second.

Next, the United States will face Germany on Monday and Canada will face Slovakia.

In the remaining games later on Sunday, France face Denmark and Sweden against Austria in Group A, while its Switzerland against Norway and the Czech Republic against Kazakhstan in Group B.
