Tempe voters on Tuesday banned the Arizona Coyotes in their bid to build a new arena complex near Priest Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.
The franchise’s future in the Valley is now uncertain, with the team without a place to play when the contract at its temporary home at Arizona State’s Mullett Arena expires after the 2024-25 season, with a common option for the 2025-26 campaign. .

We are extremely disappointed that the voters of Tempe did not pass Propositions 301, 302 and 303,” Coyotes CEO Xavier Gutierrez said in a statement. “As Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said, it was the best sports deal in Arizona history. The Coyotes would like to thank everyone who supported our efforts and voted yes. So many community leaders stepped forward and became our advocates, and we are truly grateful.
“We also want to thank the countless volunteers who worked so hard to make the Tempe Entertainment District a reality, and also the Tempe City Council for their support. Although we wanted a different outcome, we are still grateful to all those who have given their time and talent. Over the next few weeks, our owners and the National Hockey League will evaluate what is happening with the franchise.
Also NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made a statement who, on behalf of the league, expressed his disappointment with the results.
“The National Hockey League is terribly disappointed with the results of the referendums regarding the Coyotes’ Tempe arena project. We are going to look with the Coyotes at what options there might be going forward.
