The International Tennis Integrity Agency has responded to Simona Halep’s claim that they are deliberately delaying the Romanian’s hearing before an independent tribunal. Halep, who tested positive for the banned substance Roxadustat in October, received a second anti-doping charge on Friday for “irregularities” in the athlete’s biological passport.

On Monday night, Halep announced that the ITIA had asked for her hearing to be postponed for the third time. A hearing was scheduled for the end of May, and Halep accused the ITIA of “denying my right” to plead her case before an independent judge.

“We have proposed that both charges be heard together to avoid multiple trials. To do this, we want to give all parties (including an independent tribunal) sufficient time to review the relevant material relating to the latest charge.

That is ultimately the decision of an independent tribunal. Ms Halep will also have the opportunity to make her comments to them,” ITIA said in a statement.

Halep hit ITIA again

On Friday, Halep released a lengthy statement rejecting ITIA.

After learning that her hearing was postponed for a third time, Halep once again erupted at the ITIA. “I am once again extremely shocked and disappointed by ITIA’s attitude. Although ITIA publicly stated through its representative Nicole Sapstead 3 days ago that ITIA remains committed to engaging Ms. Halep in an empathetic, efficient and timely manner”. At the same time, I officially asked the court to postpone my hearing for the third time.

ITIA publicly announces one thing and does another privately, I have repeatedly requested my hearing and ITIA has repeatedly sought to delay it. When will it end? I’ll ask the question one more time. I have the right to an expedited hearing.

Acting in this way is against my rights,” Halep said in a new statement. Last week, Halep said she was living a “nightmare” because of the ITIA.
