Andy Reid issues ‘flag football’ alert on NFL kickoff rule

Andy Reid is not a fan of the NFL’s new kickoff rule.

The change, which fits with the league’s trend of potentially eliminating kickoffs altogether because they are one of the sport’s most dangerous plays, says a fair catch behind the 25-yard line puts the ball on the receiving team’s 25-yard line.

Essentially, the rule eliminates a large percentage of return attempts because the incentive is now just to make a fair catch from anywhere in the court.

It also makes it difficult for the kicking team to hit the opposition back with a coffin corner or deep kick.

The competition board approved the rule change on Tuesday and it is only valid for one year.

There is no guarantee that it will remain for 2024, and there is recent precedent for a one-year rule change being overturned.

For example, the passport interference playback system was introduced in 2019, but did not return the following year.

“We made this rule one year just because we really want to get to a long-term solution, and maybe the long-term solution involves more revenue in the game and just trying to make the game safer,” the head of the competition commission. Rich McKay said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“… Special teams is a critical part of our game. And yet, for health and safety reasons, we had to move many times over the years. Now we have to find a way to try to change the rule, if we can, in a way that we can get the kick back into the game.”

The change puts the NFL in line with college football, which has the same rule.

As a result, the diminishing importance of starts means there is likely to be a backlash to the trade with Reid at the front of the line.
