Moeen Ali, the talented all-rounder, revealed that it was only England’s charismatic captain, Ben Stokeswho could persuade him to come into test retirement for the future Ashes series against Australia.
Stokes took to Moeen with a simple but powerful message, a question mark and the words ‘Ashes?’ This unexpected communication from his fellow players caught Moeen off guard.
“Stokesy sent me a question mark – ‘Ashes?'” Moeen revealed during a press interaction at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
At first, Moeen thought Stokes was joking and was unaware of the news Jack Leachn disability. However, when Moeen learned of Leach’s ineligibility, he spoke to Stokes to discuss the possibility.

“Then the news came through and I had a chat with him,” Moeen explained. “That was it. That’s the Ashes. To be a part of that would be amazing.”
Moeen last played Test cricket in September 2021 and his decision to return was heavily influenced by his growing relationship with Stokes. The duo had spent time together as teammates at Chennai Super Kings in this year’s Indian Premier League. Moeen acknowledged the importance of Stokes’ role in his return, stating: “Probably not, no” when asked if any other captain could have made him consider retirement.
In his 64 Test appearances for England, Moeen has shown his ability as both a devastating batsman and a skilled off-spinner. However, the Ashes against Australia have proved to be a tough test for him as his bowling average has risen from 36.66 to 64.65 in these encounters.
Nevertheless, Moeen is keen to grab the chance to be a part of the Ashes series and expresses his excitement to be part of England’s pursuit of their first Ashes win since 2015.

“The fact that it’s the Ashes and it’s such a big series, it would be amazing to be a part of it,” Moeen said.
He also praised Stokes’ impact on the team’s performance, highlighting the freedom and confidence he brings to their approach. Moeen emphasized that under Stokes there is no doubt or restriction on the shots they play, allowing him to take more risks. He also praised Stokes’ aggressive mindset with the ball and admitted that while he can concede runs, Stokes recognizes opportunities for match-winning deliveries.
England have enjoyed remarkable success since Stokes teamed up with coach Brendon McCullum last year, winning 11 of their 13 Tests. Moeen is excited to be part of the team’s exciting style of cricket as they prepare for the highly anticipated Ashes series.
