Maria Christoforak’s inspiring journey: powered by the #TableTennisUnited Fund

Maria Christoforaki, a Greek table tennis player and coach living in Sweden, faced uncertainty when the COVID-19 pandemic threatened her career. However, her persistence, combined with invaluable support from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) group’s #TableTennisUnited Fund, pushed her forward, leading her to play a key role in Sweden’s inaugural Girl Festival, held on 21 June 2023.

ITTF and ITTF Foundation President Petra Srling, who visited the festival, along with SBTF Director Thomas Buza and Maria were deeply moved and deeply inspired by the unwavering dedication shown by the participants. The festival served as a living testament to the transformative power of table tennis, bringing immense joy and positive change to countless lives.

The #TableTennisUnited Fund, a joint effort between the ITTF Foundation, ITTF and World Table Tennis, provided the global table tennis community with vital financial assistance and equipment support during the pandemic. Recognized for its outstanding response to COVID-19, the campaign has helped around 150 initiatives and individuals worldwide.

With heartfelt gratitude, Maria said, “The help of the ITTF team was crucial and proved important during these difficult times. Losing my job and not being able to play table tennis was disheartening, but their support allowed me to fulfill my duty and pursue my passion in a foreign country.”

Thanks to the help she received, Maria not only continued to play table tennis, but also became a respected coach and women’s strategist in the Swedish Table Tennis Federation (SBTF). His unwavering dedication and expertise have inspired young players and fostered a community of courage and camaraderie.

Maria’s impressive journey led her to a key role in organizing Sweden’s first Girl Festival in Halmstad. With the city’s previous support, the fully booked festival during the 2018 World Table Tennis Championships brought together more than a hundred enthusiastic girls aged 8-90, who actively participated in various fascinating table tennis activities at the prestigious Halmstad Arena. Under Maria’s guidance, the participants were divided into three groups, each of which was led by passionate mentors. The festival soon became a celebration of diversity and unity, empowering women of all ages, regardless of disability, as they discovered the profound impact of collective effort and mutual empowerment.

Maria’s story is a testament to the resilience and empowerment that can be achieved through support and unity in challenging times.
