Men’s tennis takes home several VaSID awards on Wednesday

NORFOLK, Va. The 2022-23 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Men’s Tennis All-State team was announced Wednesday and several Old Dominion Monarchs were recognized.

Cosme Rolland De Ravel was named Rookie of the Year and was a second team selection in singles. in doubles, Brandon Perez and Younes Lalami were the team’s first honors Jakob Cadonau joined De Ravel in singles on the second team.

Rolland De Ravel had an impressive rookie season, going 25-10 in singles and a combined 25-8 in doubles. He earned second-team All-Sun Belt individual honors after going 7-1 in the conference. Rolland De Ravel had a season-best seven-game winning streak and finished the year winning 10 of his last 13 games. He avenged an earlier loss to South Alabama by winning the conference championship match 6-3, 6-2 to lift the Monarchs. one point for the championship. He was named the ITA Atlantic Rookie of the Year earlier this month and is up for a national award.

He became the first monarch to win VaSID’s Rookie of the Year awards since Aziz Kijametovic in 2016.

A transfer to Ole Miss, Cadonau compiled an 18-12 record this spring and went 6-1 in Sun Belt Conference play in singles play. On the doubles court this spring, he was 17-8 and 3-1 in the league. He beat #17 Auburn, #42 UTSA and #52 SMU in the spring. He went undefeated in four singles matches in conference play.

Perez and Lalami qualified for the ITA Fall Nationals after advancing to the semifinals of the Atlantic Regional with wins over Virginia and Virginia Tech. They finished the year 18-11 overall and ranked nationally. They went undefeated in the Sun Belt Conference and got the deciding point in the NCAA Tournament matchup with Utah.
