Scotland 185 for three (Cross 74*, McMullen 69) bat West Indies 181 (Holder 45, McMullen 3-32, Watt 2-25) by seven runs

Five years ago in Harare, West Indies benefited from a controversial umpiring decision and a timely rain stoppage to secure their place in the 2019 ODI World Cup at the expense of Scotland. The two-time champions had no such luck in 2023 as West Indies crashed out of the World Cup qualifiers in India with a seven-wicket loss to Scotland in Harare.

Thus, the 13th ODI World Cup will be the first without West Indies, who won the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979 and also reached the final in 1983.

Scotland, on the other hand, is a strong contender for one of the two World Cup spots in the qualifiers. they have four points, while Super Six leaders Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have six points each. All-rounder Brandon McMullen was a star with both ball and bat. He took three wickets and scored a half-century for Scotland. Maiden ODI win against West Indies.

To build the pressure, Scotland captain Richie Berrington asked them to bat in difficult conditions and their trio fell to McMullen in the first six overs. Johnson Charles bowled one to cover point, Shamarh Brooks was cutting a wide ball to slip and Brandon King was double bluffed when the cover fielder was pushed back and ended up spooning a full and straight ball back to the bowler.

Chris Sole went for a rebound and then went long for a layup by Kyle Mayers. Shai Hope’s attempt to tone down the aggression with caution ended Safyaan Sharif, who turned back the clock to take on the 2018 qualifier by opening up and beating Hope. McMullen bowled nine overs on the trot and finished with winning figures of 3 for 32.

With the score at 60/5, Jason Holder and Nicholas Pooran focused on stabilizing the wicket, striking a combined 50 balls and conceding just 21 runs. But Mark Watt tempted Pooran with a flying ball that swept out of nowhere into the hands of Christopher McBride on the cow corner boundary.

Romario Shepherd joined Holder to complete 77 runs for the seventh wicket, but when Shepherd tried to pick up the pace in the 37th over, he was caught by a flying Sharif. Three balls later, Chris Greaves trapped Holder lbw and West Indies were finally all out for 181 in the 44th over.

Scotland lost McBride’s chase in the first over, but that wicket paired McMullen with Matthew Cross and the pair carefully negotiated the threat of the new ball. In the 12th over, Akeal Hosein lured McMullen into a slog sweep but Mayers dropped the chance to deep midwicket.

McMullen hit Alzarri Joseph’s hard length ball for six down the ground in the 17th over to show he was in control of the chase. Both the batsmen mainly worked the ball around, rotated the strike and collected fifties during their 125 runs. When McMullen found the long distance from Joseph, Scotland didn’t panic as Cross was there to continue directing the chase with first George Munsey and then Berrington to claim victory in the 44th.

For the West Indies, this defeat continued their decline in white-ball cricket. The two-time T20 World Cup champion had crashed out in the group stage of that tournament last year. It led to a major white-ball shake-up when Pooran stepped down as captain and Daren Sammy was appointed as the white-ball coach. Sammy joined forces with Hope in this World Cup qualifier, but the campaign has been disappointing as defeats to Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and now Scotland ended the West Indies’ chances of qualifying for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India in October.
