The University of Vermont athletic department announced Tuesday that they have relieved Todd Woodcroft of his position as head men’s hockey coach. The move followed a university investigation into inappropriate text messages Woodcroft allegedly sent with a student.
“In reviewing the results of an investigation this week by UVM’s Office of Affirmative Action and Equity, it is clear that Coach Woodcroft did not meet those expectations,” athletic director Jeff Schulman said in a statement. The specific conduct that led to the investigation included inappropriate text messages with a UVM student on multiple occasions that did not adhere to professional boundaries.
Woodcroft, who turns 51 next month, has worked for many professional teams, including five in the NHL. His brother Jay is the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers. Woodcroft, who was hired by the Catamounts in 2020, had a 20-55-9 record at the school. It was his first job at the collegiate level.
Woodcrofts lawyer Andrew Miltenberg has already circulated a statement to the media oppose the study and its conclusions.
We strongly disagree with the process and the results of the proceedings, which lacked fundamental fairness and due process, Miltenberg said in a statement. We strongly believe that the university’s decision was against the facts and the law. We intend to pursue justice for Mr. Woodcroft, who has been an outstanding coach and community advocate for over two decades.
Steve Wiedler, who has also been with the team since 2020, will take over as interim coach.
“The team and I have tremendous confidence in Coach Wiedlers ability to lead our program to success,” Schulman said in a statement.
