Lady Warrior Tennis Takes Spring Season | Sport

There was so much uncertainty around the girls ’tennis season that returning players and coaches were pleased to hear that CIF would allow an abbreviated schedule this spring to allow competition with other schools in Kern County to take place.

Mountain Tennis took full advantage of playing a six-game schedule against Garces Memorial, Cesar Chavez Delano, Kennedy Delano, Wasco and Taft (twice).

It wasn’t our normal league when we played against Bakersfield schools, but we were still happy that the girls could have a competition, said head coach Amy Lang. We really didn’t have a league name against these other schools, so we just called it the Covid League.

After a successful “Covid League,” Tehachapi participated in a personal tournament in South Yosemite in Bakersfield, where Cartina Hibbard and Carli Trillo performed spectacularly.

The younger Trillo won his first round against a Golden Valley opponent 6-3, 7-5 and a second match against a Western opponent 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Trillo finished sixth and made it to the South Area tournament. In the Southern Territory tournament, Trillo lost in the first round to Mira Monte’s opponent to end an impressive season.

Hibbard, Tehachap’s senior, number one in the South Yosemite tournament, said goodbye to the first round and then called his Bakersfield Christian opponent and won 6-4, 7-5. In the semifinals, Hibbard played an opponent from Ridgeview and won 6-1, 7-5 before being relegated to a final against a Bakersfield Christian opponent 6-3, 6-2. In the Southern tournament, Hibbard lost his first-round match to his Centennial opponent.

Hibbard finished his high school tennis game as a four-year college player, playing in numerous tournaments across Southern California. This fall, he will attend Hope International University in Fullerton, where he plans to play tennis for the Royals and pursue a degree in education.

I was very proud of how the girls did this year, it was a pleasure to work and coach with all of them, Lang added.

The Lady Warriors played Catrina Hibbard, Julie Mizner, Carli Trillo, Kaylee Hitt, Sydney Russell and Arame Etcheverry this season.
