LONG BEFORE The NBA bubble or Playoff P, before the back cover page or “All the Smoke” was thrown to former coach Doc Rivers, conversations shaping Paul George and LA Clippers this season took place in the Chauncey Billups man’s cave in Denver.
Billups was still the team’s broadcaster in its first year. Tyronn Lue was Rivers’ senior assistant. And like so many Americans in the early days of the pandemic, they had chosen a group of guys with whom they got a better idea of when the season – and society as a whole – could continue.
Billups’ wife Piper was okay with the idea on one condition:
“I told them,‘ If everyone comes, I won’t put pressure on my wife. We’re hiring a chef, ”Billups told the group, which included Lee’s cousin J.Carter and former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones. When the restaurant industry was in trouble, they hired a head chef from Ocean Prime.
However, basketball was the main dish on the menu.
“We dive into it four or five hours a day,” Read said. Zoom calls were made regularly with Rivers and other Clippers staff. But the Billups House working group became its own incubator. Space allowed people to look at the team – and their own careers – with fresh eyes.
“I spent all that time talking and studying, doing all the work with Ty,” Billups said. “It actually made my decision to coach.”
The Clippers were among the favorites to win the NBA title, but there was something in the offense that didn’t feel right. Kawhi Leonard and George were great separately, but both superstars didn’t make each other or the other team better.
However, there was only so much that could be changed before the season resumed in July. When Lue became head coach in October, he asked Billups to be the lead assistant and take over the Clippers guards.
However, the Clippers had no traditional guards on the list – nor did they have much help in the free agent or trade market. So Read and Billups went back to a concept they had been talking about for months: working with George and Leonard to take on more play assignments.
“I just think with the two top scorers, they need to be able to make the guys better,” Read said. “These two guys can trigger anyone at any time. Now we’re talking about a hoop attack to make your teammates heal.”
Billups has taken the lead with George, Leonard and Reggie Jackson, watched the movie and talked to them throughout the game about how to see the game through the eyes of a game guard.
It’s different role for each of them. Leonard has played with other players such as Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet. George has played with guards like George Hill, Russell Westbrook and Raymond Felton.
But for Clippers ’violation to become greater than the sum of its parts, it is a role that everyone has learned to assume.
