KOLKATA: The city’s main clubs, which opened their doors to members after a new series of relaxation, have proved a reasonable footprint as members arrived at both games and food and drink at designated bars and restaurants. Heritage clubs such as the Tolly Club, RCGC and Calcutta Club, as well as new ones such as the Princeton Club, reopened on June 16 after a 45-day hiatus.
Tolly Club, Calcutta Club and Princeton Club reopened their restaurants and bars and continued sports activities, while RCGC has only started playing sports on Wednesday. Some other cultural heritage clubs, such as Calcutta Rowing Club and Lake Club, will resume operations in a few days. The Eastern Metropolitan Club will reopen on Monday.
Tolly Club CEO Anil Mukherjee told TOI that many members arrived on the first day. There will be a lot of them. Given the bad weather, it’s very positive, he said. Tolly has opened restaurants and bars in the open area and restarted tennis and golf. RCGC has started golfing, tennis, table tennis, snooker and bowling, among other things. We will gradually start all sports. More than 100 golfers were played on Wednesday. All the other games also got off to a good start, said RCGC committee member Titoo Baweja.
However, he said the bars and restaurants will open after a while. Our problem is how the staff comes, he said.
P Neemani, chairman of the Calcutta Club Food Subcommittee, was also optimistic. We have over 30 members in the dining room. I hope things get better, he said. At the Calcutta Club, vaccinations must be access for members.
Sanjay Karmakar, chief operating officer of Princeton Club, said about 40 people came to dine on the first day. We hope things get better, he said.
Some other clubs are preparing to reopen later this week.
Calcutta Rowing Club Secretary Chandan Roychowdhury had said the club bars and restaurants would be opened after all precautions. We have already vaccinated most of our staff and the rest are also being vaccinated. Members who want to come to the club must also be vaccinated, he said.
The joint secretary of Lake Club Subrata Guhan said it would open restaurants and bars on Friday after the club was cleaned up.
