The last decade has been the most successful in the history of Isidore Newman’s football program, and the final season was another great addition to the list.

The Greenies made the regular season invincible and reached the state semifinals for the second year in a row. The narrow defeat at the hands of final state champion Lafayette Christian was the only obstacle that prevented Newman from making his first trip to the state finals.

Head coach Nelson Stewart and the club have a lot of pride in coming back; however, they are not happy with their 2020 campaign.

We couldn’t have been more focused, motivated, and ready to work and improve every day as we prepare for the fall, said Stewart, a Newman alumnus and former Tulane defender.

The Greens have to get along without a few of last season’s key workers, including two-way star Sterling Scott, defense gear Joshua Koeppel and propeller / linebacker Will Hardie, as well as wide receivers John Charbonnet and Pike Philbert. But the locker on Jefferson Avenue is far from bare.

We feel very strongly that we will improve, ”Stewart explained. “We’ve made many players come back with a gaming experience, especially with a great gaming experience.

Expectations are again high for a powerful attack led by elite field player Arch Manning (64, 210). A name that should be familiar to most Louisiana states and even the entire country, junior is one of the people’s most coveted recruitments.

Because of his habit, he really doesn’t look in the spotlight or pay so much attention to it, ”Stewart said. “We’re just focused on the team. We focused on our work in the printing room, good installations and our own installations where noise was cut. We are going to be team focused.

Stewart is convinced that his quarterback can’t only handle the pressure on him, but Manning is also humble to succeed under it. After setting a 1922 pass, 21 touches and eight interruptions after completing 67% of his passes in 10 matches, more are expected this season. He also ran 38 times with 274 yards and eight touches, showing he’s not just a pocket passerby.

Manning has a wide range of weapons at his disposal, including AJ Johnson, the leading recipient in recent years (64, 205). The LSU commitment had a lot of potential to catch 40 feeds for 558 yards and five touches.

Opposite Joni is broad receiving junior Kai Donaldson (64, 195), who aims to build a solid second-year student’s season from 26 receptions to 373 yards and three touches.

Tight head Will Randle (64, 240) also returns to his younger year. Last season, he collected 19 receptions for 186 yards and 2 contacts.

Will Randle has become bigger, faster and stronger and has been able to build things around him. “Stewart praised.” I can’t say enough about him that he’s matured into an even better player.

Randle also participated in the defense, where he collected 28 tackles, 9.0 losses and 3.0 sacks. During the high season, he has received offers from major time programs such as LSU and Texas.

Stewart and offensive line coach Jason Matthews have a lot more size in the trenches this season than usual.

Our line game has become much stronger and more physical, ”Stewart said. “We should be over 220 (pounds or more) this year.

In the attack, Greenies relies on another LSU commitment, left Bo Bordelon (66, 280). His younger brother Brett Bordelon (64, 240) starts a fresh rigging as a freshman.

In the defense led by coordinator Dustin Nothnagel, a significant year is coming in, with them keeping seven of their ten opponents out of a total of one-point points. A stable number of returned beginners from last year are returning.

Senior defensive head John Guillot (60, 190) had a great year in 2020, when he made 25 tackles, 5 losses and kicked the quarterback 3 times.

Junior Ramaj Waiters (61, 230) joins Randle and Guillot on the defensive line, giving Newman a very strong and strong front. The waiters produced 45 buttons, 11 for losses and 2.0 sacks from the interior of the Greenies line. Last year, ineligible Brandon Wilkins (62, 290) added a huge new presence to the line of defense indoors.

Ramaj Waiters and Brandon Wilkins were really excited that those two were able to work together. I’m really excited about the seven front in our defense and we have a chance to be very supportive against the run, Stewart said.

Chris Hunter (61, 175) is once again occupying a vacant security position where he had 16 tackles and three interruptions for Newman last year. He is also involved in the violation. Chris has had the best summer as a wide receiver from top to bottom, he’s been great, Stewart added.

Jack Robert (510, 175) returns to his older season from a corner kick, giving Greenies even more experience from the secondary. Not a typical angle, he stands out as a running defender and sometimes rushes past a passerby. Last year, he had 22 tackles, 4.0 losses and 2.0 sacks from the outside.

The Greenies have seven of their 10 regular season matches at home, so they spend a lot of time within the friendly limits of Michael Lupine Field.

Newman opens the 2021 season with a match with downtown enemy Lusher. Week 2 is Greenies ’first big challenge as they travel to the Reserve to host the Riverside Academy Rebels. In recent years, the match was a thriller in which Newman eventually became the winner, 31-26.

Week 3 kicks off the Greenies ’four-game home run as they face the perennial power of West St. John, Metairie Park Country Day, Pearl River and Fisher in their home country.

Newman heads to LaPlace to face his district rival St. Charles ’Catholic comet. Last year’s game was a low score as both defenses played exceptionally. Newman ultimately won the 14-7 victory in the end in Division III.

Week 8 is one of the biggest games in program history as Berkeley Prep travels from Tampa Bay, Florida all the way to the Greenies in New Orleans. This game can be televised nationally. Newman played Booker T. Washington against ESPN last year.

Newman encounters Cohen at home and then finishes the 2021 regular season on his way to Port Sulfur to meet the South Plaquemines Hurricanes.

Its a well balanced schedule, and I certainly hope that by then I will know well where we are. “Stewart described in detail: ‘From a state perspective and we know very well what we need to do.

Despite the years of success that the Stewarts violation has brought to his program over the years, he believes there is still much room for improvement.

Hopefully you can put a second layer of complexity into the feed game. We were able to accomplish a lot of things this offseason, and I think we’ll be able to expand our operations in all three stages – throwing, including football and tempo.

Dissatisfied doesn’t portray anything about Stewart’s Greenies, a group that has still not reached its peak despite having placed several great teams and players over the years.

The goal is to correct every shortcoming we perceive (last year), which means that our goal is, of course, to win the state championship, it must continue to be. We’ve been so close so many times. “

If an entire team can win in many different ways, that’s Newman’s ultimate goal if he wants to win the state title in the end.

“We have to do to reach this top level, we have to play great defense, we have to take care of football and we have to win in advance that we want to be an old school.

In fact, the most successful Greenie teams weren’t always the busiest or most subtle winners. Those teams were grinders that were able to scrap every inch of the screen. The victory in the trenches has distinguished the good Newman teams from the big ones. This year’s team seems to have all the ingredients for just that.

We’ve been in the semifinals of the last three seasons and been after a tough loss to LCA, and we’re very focused and determined to improve, ”Stewart said.

Newman doesn’t have that much farther to go for the better.
