SOUTHAMPTON: New Zealand has a few contingency plans, but rejecting the opening day of the final of the test race against India due to rain is unlikely to make a huge difference in team selection, Vice Captain Tom Latham said Friday.
The long-awaited Opening Day of the match was suspended without even a throw being held here on Friday, which is meant to bring a spare day into the equation.
“It’s unlikely to change a large number (XI game selection),” Latham said during a virtual press conference when asked if losing the first day would change their approach to team selection.
“Obviously, on an extra day we have raised our sleeves, the game can still be continued for five days. I think it is about waiting and seeing and adapting to any circumstances we face and who are ready to leave when we are invited.
“We haven’t confirmed the last XI yet, we have to wait until we get a chance to look at the gate. I’m sure Kane (Williamson) and (Gary) Stead have planned a few preparations. We have to wait for the decks to come loose and get a chance to play.”
Although New Zealand have not yet announced their play for XI, India had nominated the team for the WTC final on Thursday.
“Obviously, both teams can make changes before the throw, so both are in the same position. India have named their XI, apparently it can change before the throw, so we have to wait and see when we get to that stage of the game,” Latham said.
According to the weather forecast, rain and thunder and the sky opened last night until the rains continued until the afternoon.
According to the WTC Finals ICC Terms and Conditions, the six-day booking can now take effect as a six-hour game loss on Day 1.
“It’s disappointing, the rain was predicted unfortunately. It’s one of the things we as cricketers have to adapt to, and unfortunately we can’t control, it’s about waiting for the opportunity.
“It’s also day 6, so there’s a little extra time we can use. So wait and see and see tomorrow.”
Latham said his team doesn’t look too far ahead.
“It’s hard to predict the game so far when you start on day 1, of course you want to start well and the result goes in its first and second turn,” he said.
“From our perspective, it’s about getting a chance to go there and execute our plans as well as possible and be able to push the game forward.
“But yeah, it’s hard to say what the perfect scenario might look like until both teams have hit the surface.”
