World number 12 Denis Shapovalov said Monday he will not be playing tennis in Canada at the Tokyo Olympics, citing safety concerns, although Covid-19 remains a global concern.

Shapovalov did not specify the deadly coronavirus in a tweet in which he announced his decision.

“Hi everyone, after careful consideration I wanted to let you know that I am not going to attend the Olympics this year,” Shapovalov said.

“Representing Canada means the world to me, but given the current situation, our team and I have decided this is the best decision for everyone’s safety.”

22-year-old left-handed Shapovalov won his only ATP title in 2019 in Stockholm. He finished second at the Paris Championships in 2019 and reached the third ATP final of his career – first with clay – last month in Geneva and lost to Norwegian Casper Ruud.

The Canadian reached his first Grand Slam final at last year’s US Open.
