The news, which was likely to shock most Texas football fans, arrived on the afternoon of June 22nd. Rising Texas widescreen receiver and former highly advertised four-star recruiter Jake Smith now plans to come to the NCAA transfer portal, per several sources, including 247Sports. This may be the biggest loss for a transfer portal in Texas.
And this may well be considered one of Longhorns ’most damaging transfer losses, as the portal first captured the university’s football landscape a few years ago. Smith is clearly a significant loss to this host group, and new head coach Steve Sarkisian will have to figure it out in the near future.
Smith left almost the entire spring camp because of a broken leg. And he seemed to return probably or almost in full force to Longhorns during his summer practice. Restoring her full touch to the exercises at the start of the fall camp seemed to be a major goal for Texas and this strength and caring staff in the coming months.
What next for Texas football and WR Jake Smith?
And while Smith’s transition to the portal isn’t really good news for Texas, it doesn’t guarantee he’s ready to leave forty acres for good. Some players test the transfer market and return to their original school if nothing else attracts them.
Texas is losing scale, which was one of their most proven and productive returns to Austin this year. Smith recorded 48 catches for 568 receiving yards (11.8 yards per catch) and nine contacts for the previous two seasons for Longhorns.
There could now be more pressure for players like younger and more unproven widescreen players, with former five-star recruitment and a red-shirt red shirt Jordan Whittington to fill this depth left by Smith. Whittington and Smith had already set the Duke to begin their plays in the slot game this fall. But given Whittington’s spotty damage history, this lack of depth in the slot game could now be worrying.
Texas seemed ready to hit the transfer portal to fill the depth after this offseason as the Sark coaching system seized Forty Acres. But this might open the door to turn to the portal again.
The latest transfer portal addition to Longhorns came in the form of Keilan Robinson, a former director of the Alabama Crimson Tide app. The portal move will not be made to Longhorns after the loss of Smith on June 22nd.
