Thomas Wilcher saves Detroit recruitment

Mel Tucker has done it again, people. Just when we thought he couldn’t bring hope back to the level of Mark Dantonio’s era, he goes out and adds Detroit’s top high school coach as an analyst to the Michigan State football staff.

According to all the local media, the deal was almost made for Cass Tech’s Thomas Wilcher to join Michigan State staff, giving Spartans a real recruiting presence in Detroit.

However, this doesn’t make Michigan fans very happy, as Wilcher is a “Michigan man” and they probably hope Jim Harbaugh already made this move. They added Ron Bellamy to the West Bloomfield staff, which was a big win and is already helping them with some recruitments in the area, and the state of Michigan hopes to repeat it.

Wilcher is one of the best coaches in the state and has won three Division 1 state certificates with Cass Tech. He has had five players in the NFL.

Unfortunately, this transfer will lock down the state of Michigan from Cass Tech for two years because it’s an analyst role and not a field coach, so the state of Michigan can’t load a child from a talented school until 2024.

Mel Tucker tries to change the tides

For years, Michigan from Dantonio Days has dominated the city of Detroit as well as state recruitment. There were exceptions every now and then, but the Ahmas began to land essentially anyone they wanted because Dantonio had no staff to compete by recruiting.

Now that Wilcher has joined the staff along with Courtney Hawkins (two former high school coaches in Michigan), Spartans have fighting opportunities for children living in the state – especially the best views in the Detroit area.

This is a move Tucker made in the long run. He made this move knowing that he would be excluded from Cass Tech until 2024, and he was fine as long as he improved state and Detroit recruitment for years. And Wilcher is going to help more than just Cass Tech because Detroit extends far beyond a single school.

Tucker made the championship move and it paid off right away.
