It was the 14th time the world’s top-ranked hot dog eater has won the title in the last 15 years, hitting 26 more than second-placed Geoffrey Esper and one more than Chestnut succeeded last year.
On the women’s side Michelle Lesco, finished ninth, took his first championship after consuming 30 3/4 hot dogs and buns, 6 3/4 more than runner-up Sarah Rodriguez.
Miko Sudo, a defensive seven – time champion, did not compete this year as she expects her first child later this month. Sudo reached the women’s record in 2020 when he ate 48.5 hot dogs and buns.
The annual July 4 event was held in front of spectators on Coney Island.
Last year’s competition was held in a private media venue just because of a coronavirus pandemic.
By Nathan, legend has it that the first competition of its kind was held on July 4, 1916, when four immigrants competed to show how patriotic they were by eating hot dogs at Nathan’s stand on Coney Island.
The competition has only been registered since 1972.
