Five Cougar Tennis Student Athletes, named CoSIDA Academic All-District

The 2020-21 academic All-District At-Large teams were announced Thursday afternoon, and five Azusa Pacific tennis student-athletes were recognized. From the men’s team Jakob Schnaitter, Sam Sippeland Leyton Drill was respected, and on the women’s side Anna Savchenko and Jacky Wagner was elected. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team recognizes student-athletes for their outstanding performance in the classroom and competition area.

Sippel received the CoSIDA All-District when he finished the academic year with a GPA (Business Economics) of 3,951. In his first full season with Cougars, he was named a duel All-American after going 15-2 (No. 2: 14-1 | No. 1: 1-1). He was named to the All-PacWest First-Team and doubles. Nationally, he was recognized as an ITA rookie of the year and ranked 14th. Sippel collaborated Ryan Nuno, the pair ended the 2021 double season with a 16-3 record (No. 2: 14-3 | No. 1: 2-0). In singles and doubles, Sippel posted a record 31-5 percent win.

Schnaitter, who just worked yesterday, was named PacWest Men’s Tennis Researcher of the Year when she graduated with a 3.81 GPA (Business Administration). He also shone on the field in the 2021 campaign, where he was named a second-year PacWest player. He ended the season with an 18-1 record in singles as he was named All-American. Thanks to his efforts, he had his last national ranking No. 3. In the doubles, he placed a record 17-3. Throughout his career, he has etched himself into the Cougar record books, finishing second in single-place wins (.957), third in singles wins No. 1 (44) and wins in doubles and twins (.833), and quarter-unit wins (.928).

Bohren, Schnaitter’s twin partner, ended the school year 2020-21 with 3,828 GPAs (biology). On the field, he ended the season with an 8-6 single record when he was selected to the third-team All-PacWest team. (No. 4: 8-5 | No. 3: 0-1). Bohren and Schanitter were recognized as dual Americans and named First-Team All-PacWest. The duo finished third in the season nationally and No. 1 in the western region.

On the women’s team, Wagner received the CoSIDA At-Large Awards when he recorded a 3.94 GPA (psychology) in his final year at Cougars. This is the second year in a row that he was appointed to the CoSIDAAcademic All-District. The PacWest conference recognized Wagner yesterday as a female tennis researcher-athlete of the year. Wagnersaw’s success on the field was also evident when he led Cougar’s program to the first ever PacWest championship. He was named the best player in the tournament after going undefeated in a duel. His 16-2 single record (No. 3: 15-2 | No. 2: 1-0) led to his team’s first All-PacWest selection. In cooperation Carolyn Brooner, Wagner also posted a 14-4 record in the singles (No. 2: 13-4 | No. 1 1-0).

Anna Savchenko he was appointed to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team when he finished the academic year 2020-21 with a 3.7 GPA as he continued his degree in English. In the final year with Cougars, he went 8-5 in doubles No. 2 and 11-3 in doubles No. 1. Savchenko was appointed to Second-Team All-PacWest in singles. Incorporated Petra Ivankovic in the duel, the two were named to the First Team All-PacWest and finished the year nationally in 8th place.

Sippel, Schnaitter, Bohren, Wagner and Savchenko are now placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America recipients will be announced in August.
