Fortnite finally gets a countdown to a new live event, that’s when it ends

It’s been a while since Fortnite had a countdown to a real live event, but since the servers came back online after a patch today, that has changed. We are in fact headed to another of the games’ famous live events, the ones that tend to outdo each other the more they play.

A new countdown timer has appeared on the game’s main lobby screen, currently set to end between ten days and a few odd hours, depending on what time you read it. If you do the math, the end result is that the live event should take place:

Friday, August 6 at 6 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. PT.

So mark your calendars if you want to see whatever is about to happen. And we may have at least some ideas, according to recent rumors. Maybe not because of the event itself, but maybe because of the things that led to that event.

What will reportedly happen is that several named areas will be destroyed and abducted by the mothership, including Coral Cove, Slurpy Swamp, and Corny Complex, which will begin to float like the zones we have seen abducted inside the mothership.

Again, I don’t think this is literally what the event itself will be, and this part could take place in the stages leading up to that event. At the moment, the mothership remains inactive in the game.

After that? Maybe. We’ve already had an invasion going on all season, so it’s possible the mothership will alter the geography of the entire map in some way with an Independence Day-style laser blast or something. But knowing Fortnite, I would expect something more elaborate given the scale of past events involving meteor attacks and giant monster fights. Regardless of what happens, it probably won’t be something you want to miss out on.

Well, we need to see how things play out over the next few days and when several preliminary events may begin. This has been a generally well-received season with all things alien, and I really have a hard time imagining what the ending might be to top it all off. I assume that whatever happens, the mothership won’t be around for another full season after this one, but I have to see. No doubt the events will somehow lead to the theme and scope of the next season.
