Petition: Engine asks technology leaders to stand up for DACA to support innovation

For the world of technology, innovation is more than just a watchword. It is a key part of how the industry survives.

With this in mind, DC nonprofit Engine is petitioning tech organizations to push politicians to stand up for DACA, or deferred action for childhood arrivals. Federal immigration policy allows people who were brought to the United States as children to postpone legal action for two years and receive a work permit.

This petition comes in the wake of a Texas judge’s July decision to deem the program illegal, preventing new candidates. At the moment, the current recipients are not interested, but for potential future Dreamers, it leaves an uncertain future.

“We form the fabric of the innovation ecosystem across the country, some of us are immigrants, and we urge US policymakers to quickly implement a permanent solution for the dreamers,” the petition reads. “Without the Dreamers, many of whom represent the STEM talent that startups rely on or are the founders themselves, the United States risks the dynamism and diversity central to our position as an innovation leader.”

Jennifer Weinhart, Engine Policy Manager, told Technical.ly that this is an important space to watch for the tech industry, especially considering that many rely on Dreamers to build their talent pool. Furthermore, according to the letter, a repeal of the policy would lead to a GDP loss of $ 460 billion over the next decade.

“At a time when other countries are making significant efforts to attract innovators and the next big startup away from the United States, we must do everything we can, such as providing permanent status for Dreamers (many of whom only know the United States as home). , to welcome and retain talent here, “Weinhart said.” Making it harder for dreamers and other skilled immigrants to live and work in the United States only serves to benefit the innovation ecosystems of other countries competing with the United States. “

In addition to signing the letter, Weinhart added that he would like to see tech companies inform policymakers about how essential Dreamers are to their mission and growth. According to Weinhart, it is important for leaders to see the direct contributions of this group.

Also, Engine said, finding a solution for Dreamers could have implications beyond hiring.

“Creating a path to citizenship for Dreamers is not just the right thing to do, it’s what our tech and startup ecosystem and economy need to thrive and remain globally competitive,” said Kate Tummarello. , executive director of Engine.
