Twitter’s latest pre-tweet messages let you know when you’re about to get into a Twitter fight

Twitter is testing new messages on iOS and Android that warn before launching into a conversation that could overheat. In one example, there is a prompt inserted directly into an ongoing conversation that says conversations like this can be intense. In another, which seems to pop up if you try to respond to one of those intense conversations, it’s titled “Let’s look at each other” and features three bullet points to encourage empathic, fact-based conversations.

You can check out the instructions in the tweet below:

Ever wanted to know the mood of a conversation before joining? We were testing prompts on Android and iOS that warned you if the convo you are about to enter could get heated or intense.

Tips are the company’s latest attempt to reduce persistent harassment and abuse on the platform. Another prompt, for example, warns you before tweeting something that could be offensive. Twitter might also show a message if you try to retweet an article it thinks you haven’t read, which could help reduce the spread of misinformation. While they can help prevent some bad tweets from being shared, the growing list of potential warnings to review before tweeting is a worrying indicator of the whole experience.

As always, if you’re not sure if you need to post something, the best pre-tweet message is the one Twitter won’t show you: never tweet.
