Confession time: I’ve never played Left 4 Dead. I am obviously aware of what Valves’ iconic shooter is, team up with friends and shoot zombies and that a lot of players have sucked it up like zombies feasting on brain miasma. However, despite the ubiquity of the games, I have never succeeded. It happens sometimes! Can you blame me?
For the past few days, I’ve been dabbling with its spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood, which came out for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox earlier this week. (It’s also available via Game Pass.) I understand that the games are very, very similar, which makes sense, as Back 4 Blood is developed by Turtle Rock, the people who made the original Left 4 Dead.
Folks, I think I understand now. The formula teams up with friends and shoots zombies which absolutely rips.
Having played the Back 4 Bloods beta in August, I knew a little what to expect. But it was playing the Bar Room Blitz level this week that crystallized for me just how awesome these zombie killing games can be. Set in the middle of the first act, the premise of the levels is simple: you holed up in a bar. Start a jukebox. Zombies invade your location. If they reach the jukebox, the music stops, at which point it must be restarted. Your goal is to defend the jukebox until the song can be played all the way through. Then, an armored jeep shows up, allowing you to escape.
A few days ago, I passed the level with Kotakus Zack Zweizen. Our jukebox played Spiderbait’s Black Betty, just the absolutely perfect song for killing zombies. We both observed how perfect the tune was for the moment, the perfect soundtrack for killing hundreds of zombies. I distinctly remember saying something about it looking like we were in Zombieland or 28 days later.
I didn’t know Black Betty was one of the many songs that can appear during that scene. As it turns out, you can also get other iconic tracks and heavy riffs, like Hives ‘Tick Tick Boom, Johnny Cash’s Rusty Cage, Misfits’ All Hell Breaks Loose, and Motorhead’s Roaring Ace of Spades. (Some kind souls have pieced together the jukebox offerings in various Spotity playlists.) Reading the entire lineup, yes, everyone is as fit for the situation as Black Betty. I’m going to play the level several times to see what songs I get.

I’ve played many zombie games that capture the fast-paced frenzy of a good zombie movie, but I’ve never legitimately felt like I’m in one, not like I did with Back 4 Bloods Bar Room’s Blitz level. This alone is enough to get me back 4 more.
