Skip Holtz will not be returning to Louisiana Tech, the school announced on Friday.

“Skip and I talked and agreed it was time for both sides to change,” said CEO Eric Wood. “Louisiana Tech owes a debt of gratitude to Skip for his loyalty and dedication to our soccer student-athletes, our university and our community for the past decade.

“He was able to accomplish some things that previously hadn’t been done here on a consistent basis prior to his arrival. We continue to strive to win the conference championships and that expectation is stronger than ever.”

Holtz said the move is not a layoff or a withdrawal, but a redirect.

“This is the right time to consider a fresh start in my career,” said Holtz. “I have had the privilege of leading youth and building football programs for more than 30 years, including the last nine as head coach of Louisiana Tech. The last two seasons have brought further challenges to our program, and I just think it’s time for someone else to have the opportunity to lead this special group of young people.

“I’m not done with football coaching and I have a great passion and energy to continue guiding young people through this game that I love so much. It’s just time for me to channel my energies elsewhere.

Holtz is 64-49 at Louisiana Tech and 152-120 overall in coaching. After a 4-8 debut in 2013, Holtz led the Bulldogs to seven consecutive bowl games from 2014-20.

He led Louisiana Tech to three US Conference West Division championships, including a share of the division’s crown most recently in 2019.

The Bulldogs are 3-8 entering Saturday’s final against Rice.

Before Louisiana Tech, Holtz went 34-23 with a trip to the FCS quarterfinals in Connecticut, 38-27 with two USA Conference titles in East Carolina,
