Kapsul Tech Corp. Launches Biomechanically Tested Protective Turtleneck Shirts for Athletes to Reduce Risk of Traumatic Injuries By Tom Friend December 14, 2022
Kapsul Tech Corp. has designed a protective turtleneck shirt that supports athletes’ necks and can potentially reduce the risk of traumatic injuries.
Marketed as the Kapsul Atlas, the lightweight jersey has incorporated ‘Dynamic Neck Stabilizer Technology’ which protects the area between a player’s upper torso and head. Through combined research with the Canadian Army and the University of Waterloo, Kapsul has concluded that its product will particularly help young athletes whose muscles and bones are underdeveloped and female athletes they have identified as having “longer necks.” with lower muscle density”.
The shirt/collar has been constructed in a non-obstructive manner and should not inhibit player movement or neck flexibility. As part of Kapsul’s proprietary research, Kapsul has used a clinically validated human model known as a Finite Element Model (FEM) which is essentially an advanced test dummy. Often used by automakers, FEM has enabled the company to study the complex impact on a person’s soft tissue, skeletal structure, musculature and fluids after a violent collision.
Another collar, the Q-Collar, has also gained popularity in contact sports such as football, lacrosse and soccer. FDA-approved, the Q-Collar is worn around the neck to gently compress the jugular vein and increase blood flow to the skull, theoretically limiting the brain from moving dangerously after a major impact.
Tony Pollard and Dalton Schultz of the Dallas Cowboys, Casey Toohill of the Washington Commanders, and Meghan Klingenberg of the NWSL’s Portland Thorns are among the high-profile athletes currently wearing the Q-Collar.
