Twitter users report widespread outages

Twitter users in popular places said they experienced problems with the service Wednesday night, days after Elon Musk said he closed one of the company’s data centers in Sacramento. The problems primarily affect users of the company’s site for desktop computer users, according to Down Detector, while some have complained that its mobile app has also been experiencing issues.

The cause of the outages was not immediately clear. Some users reported being logged out of Twitter, while others said they couldn’t view replies to their tweets but did have access to other parts of the service. Other users said they’ve encountered error messages when scrolling through their timelines, the primary feed of tweets people see when they log into Twitter.

The glitches started around 7 p.m. Eastern time, according to Down Detector, a service that monitors web outages. The hashtag #TwitterDown trended on the platform as users reported their experiences with the outage.

Problems with Twitter show up in multiple countries and are widespread, said Isik Mater, director of research at NetBlocks, an Internet monitoring service. The platform’s API is affected, serving the mobile app and many aspects of the desktop site, he added, referring to the interface Twitter operates on.

Mr. Musk, who bought Twitter in late October for $44 billion, said Saturday that Twitter continued to run smoothly, even after I took one of the most sensitive rack servers offline. The billionaire has focused on cutting Twitter’s costs, eliminating supplier contracts, laying off employees, and reducing the company’s real estate footprint.
