Harnessing the technologies of tomorrow to achieve a green and digital recovery
As a first step, the EU is rightly betting big on technological innovation and connectivity infrastructure. While striving to accelerate the roll-out of 5G in Europe, the Commission should also aim to preserve the leading role of the EU and EU industry in the development of key technologies such as 5G / 6G, AI and learning. automatic, as they will pave the way for a double transition to achieve the green and digital goals of 2030.
Why focus on connectivity innovation? Considering 5G alone, the latest Analysis Mason Report shows that there is a potential return of € 210 billion on a € 46 billion investment in Europe. This will open up a host of new opportunities as the mobility, energy grids and factories of the future will all depend on these technologies. Of course, there is some gold to be found in these hills of connectivity infrastructure.
The added benefit of these investments and technological innovations is that they are also in line with the EU’s ecological objectives. More importantly, the ability to reduce emissions, waste and energy consumption. The resulting climate-friendly technology investment opportunities are exactly what the EU needs to achieve its 2030 goals.
As President von der Leyen kicks off this transition, a plethora of enterprising and innovative ICT companies have prepared and innovated to meet the ambitious 2030 goals. They are now at the forefront, ready to accelerate the EU’s digital decade.
Strong technological innovation in Europe requires strong intellectual property protection
Investment promises alone will not be enough to propel the EU into its digital decade. The right intellectual property rights framework needs to be in place to enable the necessary technological advancement that defines the era.
European technology companies may be promoters of globally recognized key technologies, but they – and their inventors – need fair rewards to continue pushing the limits of innovation and research and development work. Thanks to its existing robust IPR framework, the EU has managed in recent decades to foster and retain a highly skilled R&D workforce, but this should not be taken for granted.
Making Europe globally competitive is not just a job for the big ICT players. SMEs make up 99% of businesses in the region but, despite a number of studies linking IP to greater business growth and financial benefits, many still struggle to leverage intangible assets such as IP. Efforts to facilitate IP uptake for micro and small businesses, such as the measures announced in the European Commission’s IP Action Plan, are encouraging.
As the Commission President hinted in his speech to the 2021 Digital Assembly, another key factor in ensuring the region’s technological competitiveness is the continued involvement of European companies in the definition of new standardized technologies such as 5G. Through organizations such as 3GPP, European ICT companies have already been instrumental in establishing global standards that enable a range of new products and services to be used seamlessly around the world.
By combining a robust intellectual property rights framework and a leading role in the development of key technologies, European technology companies will be at the forefront of technological innovation and forging the success of digital transformation.
Innovation and IPR: enough?
At the start of the Digital Decade, EU institutions and tech companies face a monumental challenge: to provide lasting recovery and transformation that are sustainable, digital and global. The goals set for 2030 are ambitious and there is a long way to go. In addition to the European Commission, both the European Parliament, through ongoing discussions on its own-initiative report on “Strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights for a more competitive and resilient Europe”, and the European Council, with the upcoming Slovenian presidency , I am uniquely positioned to create a resilient, successful and competitive Europe. As long as this innovation framework is secured, there is no doubt that Europe will be poised for success.
