BENTONVILLE, Ark .– (BUSINESS WIRE) – July 13, 2021–
Sams Club is experimenting with new Scan & Go technology which explores an additional way to easily bring merchandise from a club venue to the member’s front door. This pilot program, called Scan & Ship, is integrated into the retailer’s popular Scan & Go feature within the Sams Club app and will allow members to place orders directly at home in the aisle by scanning the merchandise included in the program.
Scan & Ship offers an out-of-the-box solution within the club for items that require the transport of large vehicles such as play sets, patio furniture, mattresses, large TVs, grills and more. It also offers members the opportunity to select alternative colors and sizes not available in the club. Scan & Ship allows the member to purchase it and have it delivered to the desired destination usually within three to five business days with a simple digital transaction.
The new feature shows the opportunities for the Sams Club app to mature and evolve along with members’ buying behaviors. The Sams Club app experienced tremendous growth last year with 9.6 million downloads, according to AppTopia, nearly twice as many downloads as competing apps and boasts a 4.9 app store rating. Positive user reviews indicated that many members enjoyed the Scan & Go feature, which expanded to all Sams Club petrol stations in 2020 and saw an adoption rate increase of 43.5% year-over-year in first quarter.
We challenge ourselves every day to develop and execute cost-effective solutions that disrupt the warehouse model and provide added value to our members, said Tim Simmons, Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer of Sams Club. Just like Scan & Go, Scan & Ship delivers give members more control over their shopping experience. It is exciting to see our team develop and launch the Scan & Ship pilot so quickly, and it has great potential to deliver the best experience to omnichannel members across our chain.
Currently, three locations are participating in the pilot project, including Sams Club Now, the innovation lab based in Sams Clubs Dallas, to allow the company to collect critical member feedback and change functionality within the app before to move to other locations.
Scan & Ship is the result of an internal program we’re really proud of called the Innovation Jam, which encourages employees to collaborate and develop potential retail technology solutions during the two-day sprint-like event, said Vinod Bidarkoppa , Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Sams Club. Scan & Go has been a great success story for us and Scan & Ship is a fantastic extension of all the great innovation we already have in place.
From the evolution of its app to its tech innovation lab, Sams Club continues to be hyper-focused on digitally integrated clubs that deliver convenient, mobile-first experiences.
The brand has found great success by focusing on technological innovations, not just with Scan & Go, but the accelerated expansion of Curbside Pickup both of which were cited as compelling benefits to brand membership and growth last year.
The new Scan & Go experience offers a no-obligation demo
In addition to testing Scan & Ship, the retailer rolled out a new feature across all clubs in July that gives members who currently don’t have the Sams Club app the opportunity to try out the Scan & Go feature without the commitment to download. Sams Club app on their devices using the instant app software. The approach gives members the ability to initially try Scan & Go without taking up storage space on their devices.
We know that once our members use Scan & Go, they love the convenience it offers and are 90% more likely to use it again, so our team worked to design a solution that would give members the opportunity to test the functionality and experience the benefits firsthand, Bidarkoppa added.
The feature uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology and only requires scanning a QR code to start using it. The demo, which allows members to type in a payment option, offers the contactless shopping experience and skips the traditional checkout line. It can be used for purchases up to three times before a message asks members to download the Sams Club app to use Scan & Go.
