Plan to use pandemic relief funds to repair the roof of the criticized town hall

A decision to allocate more than $ 600,000 in federal Covid relief funding to repair the ceiling in the Binghamton City Council Chamber is igniting fire.

The city is expected to receive around $ 46 million in recovery assistance under the US bailout law that was enacted by President Biden in March.

Some people criticize the plan to spend $ 659,000 in special funding to repair the roof and ceiling of the council chamber.

Rebecca Rathmell, a homeless advocate from the Binghamton area, posted a message on Twitter expressing her opinion that “roof repairs should * not * be considered for award.”

Rathmell wrote that the acceptable use of federal money would be to pay for “efforts that meet the real needs of the community, particularly for the residents of Binghamton who have too long been disproportionately affected by racial housing and economic disparities “.

Mayor Richard David said in May that “the funding provides a unique opportunity for the Town of Binghamton to catch up with major investments and identify critical needs within the community.”
