Media headlines July 6
In the news today, Chris Cuomo continues his rampage against DeSantis while remaining silent about his brother’s scandals, media insiders are responding to the CNN host crisis with pity and criticism, and CBS appears to have ” past ”of coverage of the Andrew Cuomo scandals after avoiding coverage on the evening show.
New York Attorney General Letitia James’ report detailing multiple substantiated sexual harassment charges against Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo quickly dominated the headlines and airwaves. However, the original accusation reports did not receive nearly the same reaction from the mainstream media.
Since December, Cuomo has faced multiple allegations of harassment against him by several women. Many media outlets also initially seemed reluctant to report on the growing controversy.
Following Lindsey Boylan’s initial indictment in December, CNN was reluctant to discuss the news until February following an essay by Boylan. In a brief mention from presenter John King, the network reported the news while highlighting Boylans’ campaign to be president of the Manhattan Borough.
CNN BROADCASTS BIG IGNORES CHRIS CUOMOS ‘INVOLVEMENT IN BROTHER ANDREW CUOMOS’ HARASSMANET SEX SCANDALS
“In a statement from Cuomos ‘office, four staff members who were on that flight dispute Boylans’ story and the governor’s press secretary say his allegations of inappropriate behavior are simply false. Boylan is running for president of the Manhattan borough. She first accused the governor of sexual harassment on Twitter in December, “King said.
Another CNN presenter, Jake Tapper, also reported on the news, telling the audience, “CNN has not been able to corroborate Boylans’ claims.”
Networks such as ABC, CBS and NBC neglected to promote Boylans’ original claims in December. This stance contrasted sharply with the mainstream media response to the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Following the original letter from Senator Dianne Feinsteins, D-Calif., Requesting an investigation into an allegation in 2018, NBC reported the news the same day, announcing a “mysterious new twist on Supreme Court candidate Brett Kavanaugh “. Other networks like CNN quickly followed suit with no less than seven articles on the first allegation as it was made public.
CBS PASSED FROM CUOMO, AVOID GROWING GOVERNOR’S POLITICAL ILLNESS ON EVENING BROADCAST
While attention to Kavanaughs ‘accusers has only increased over time, attention to Cuomos’ accusers has remained mostly stagnant. In the days of Cuomo’s sixth accuser, many media outlets completely avoided covering the scandal-ridden governor.
In addition, the governor’s coverage of the charges continued to be comparatively much less combative and even at times defensive. ABC characterized Boylans’ allegations as claiming the governor was “joking” while NBC and CBS downplayed the importance of a developing bipartisan movement against him.
Cuomo’s brother, CNN host Chris Cuomo, has frequently ignored or downplayed politicians’ actions, saying reporting on him would constitute a conflict of interest. However, he often participated in talks with Governor Cuomo during the 2020 pandemic, usually with a humorous tone. Chris Cuomo, who had previously apologized for privately advising his brother, is in hot water again after the James report named him as one of the governor’s many trusted outside advisers who gave priority to its political well-being over that of the state.

This follows several months of media ignoring or downplaying Cuomos’ COVID scandals involving his administration forcing nursing homes to take in COVID-positive patients, potentially resulting in thousands of excess deaths.
Charlotte Bennett, the second woman to accuse Cuomo of harassment, specifically called on the media to work to embolden him during the pandemic and ignore growing scandals.
“Absolutely. I think he felt like he was untouchable in a lot of ways,” Bennett told Norah ODonnell on CBS.

The mainstream media has often praised Governor Cuomo as a “national leader” at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast, almost every media outlet has now called for Cuomo’s resignation in light of the report confirming the sexual harassment allegations against him.
