YouTube’s top music critic Anthony Fantano responded to criticism stemming from his recent review of Isaiah Rashad’s latest album, The House is Burning, opening a conversation about how he critiques the music of black artists.

Anthony Fantano has made a name for himself as the internet’s biggest music nerd. His YouTube channel, The Needledrio, has racked up over 2.4 million subscribers as he posts multiple video essays per week reviewing various albums and EPs.

He’s also touched the gaming world a bit as he’s a huge Super Smash Bros fan, having played the game with some of the game’s biggest content creators.

However, his latest review got him into a little drama.

The feud of Fantano Rashad

On August 4, Fantano posted a review for Isaiah Rashad’s latest album, The House is Burning. Fantano gave it a 5/10 rating and said, “The Burning House, for the most part, is about as engaging as a nonchalant buzz. “

Rashad took issue with Fantano’s score on Twitter, which caused some drama during the review.

Rashad tweeted to the YouTuber with a response to receiving such a low score, saying, “It’s not experimental enough to turn him on, basic enough to make him laugh and too dark for him to be able to.” identify. My public persona is not something to deconstruct so there is not much to review. I guess it’s just for the views if anything.

Rashad was not happy with the reviewer’s rating and criticized Fantano’s likes in the process, and accused him of giving him a low rating for views. The YouTuber didn’t hang around, however, and quickly responded to Rashad’s comments with his own tweet thread.

“You can go wild, psychoanalyze or anything that disagrees with me – comes with the territory. But know that I’m not really there to make someone feel bad about something they’ve done or enjoyed. And I really don’t think I’m worth all the controversy, but do it your way, ”he said. “I’m not sorry about anything. Just respond to something someone said and clarify.

After the exchange of the tweets, Top Dawg Entertainment President Terrence ‘Punch’ Louis Henderson Jr. tweeted to Fantano, asking, “How do you prepare to listen to and criticize black music?” What’s your routine? Just curious because the black experience through the music is quite nuanced. I just wonder how you go about it.

Fantano responded with an invitation to discuss the topic on a Zoom call, but Punch declined and suggested in the future that they could sit down for an in-person discussion on the topic.

Who knows if we’ll ever have this conversation, but surely fans would love to see it unfold.
