Tampa Bay rookie quarterback Kyle Trask didn’t shed some light on his NFL debut, but Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians didn’t see that hit him either. .

Instead, the Arians attacked receivers after a 19-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason opener on Saturday.

“These guys have to make plays for him,” Arians said at the post-match press conference. “I thought Kyle had gone there and made some throws.”

It started with Trask’s first career pass – a deep ball to first-year Bucs wide receiver Travis Jonsen that ended in failure.

“It wasn’t the plan, but I have no problem pitching it if they give it to us,” Trask said of his first pitch. “They did a good job covering us in the first guys in our progression, and I saw Travis, he came back there after they were safe, and I just tried to air one out and give him a shot.”

Trask went 4-15 for 35 yards and a 13-yard long pass. He averaged 2.3 yards per completion and finished with a completion percentage of 26.7 and a quarterback score of 39.5.

Despite the disappointments, he had his teammates’ backs when he spoke to the media.

“These are games that I saw these guys do in practice,” Trask said. “The little things just haven’t worked out for us, but we’re going to set it up and hopefully hit it next time around. “

A second-round pick from Florida with the weight of being a potential heir to future Hall of Fame member Tom Brady, Trask received a roaring ovation from the crowd as he stepped into the game.

“It’s great to have the support of the fans,” said Trask. “It’s amazing because you know they are supporting you so hopefully I can keep improving and give them what they want to see.”

Arguably his best moment in action came during a two-point conversion pass to tight end Codey McElroy in the back corner of the end zone. It came after Bucs linebacker Joseph Jones scored on a sixth pick in the fourth quarter.

“It was awesome,” Trask said. “Codey works really, really hard. And I saw that linebacker turn his back, and I knew I could give him a chance. He climbed in and made a nice catch.

Trask felt confident facing NFL competition for the first time, and he knew he also had three other experienced quarterbacks to help out with.

“Really all the quarterbacks have been in my corner and just helped me out with whatever I have a question about because they have a ton of NFL experience in each of them,” Trask said. “They are very useful for anything I have a question about.”

Trask said he understood that “it was just football” once he started playing. Going against NFL Speed ​​for the first time against a team he had seen little to no movie on didn’t faze him either, he said.

“It was a bit hard. We found old snippets of their plan and we kind of had a little knowledge of their defense, ”Trask said. “But really, we’re just trying to get out there and everyone is just trying to make their reps count because we have a lot of guys playing.”
