Reports of violence and chaos in Afghanistan as the Taliban asserted control of the nation drew criticism against President Joe Biden, but the president on Monday reaffirmed his commitment to the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Biden last week ordered 5,000 troops to return temporarily to Afghanistan to help evacuate the US embassy. These troops were needed after a massive takeover of the nation by the Taliban, the Islamic extremist group known for its violence, oppression of women and involvement in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Biden addressed the fallout from the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in a White House speech.

Here’s what I deeply believe, said Biden. It is wrong to order US troops to step up their efforts when the Afghan armed forces would not. Afghan political leaders have been unable to unite for the sake of their people, unable to negotiate for the future of their country when prices were low. They would never have done so as long as American troops remained in Afghanistan and bore the brunt of the fighting for them. And our true strategic competitors, China and Russia, would love nothing more than the United States to continue to channel billions of dollars of resources and attention to stabilize Afghanistan indefinitely.

President Donald Trump set a date for withdrawal from Afghanistan during his administration earlier this year, but Biden pushed it back after taking office. Trump has since called for Bidens’ resignation, saying he would have handled the pullout differently.

While early estimates questioned the Taliban’s ability to retake the country, or at least expected the process to take months, the terror group was able to take all major cities, including the capital, in a matter of seconds. days.
