Leicester law firm closed for dishonesty

A lawyer who acts in cases against the police and the state opposes a decision by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to prevent her from acting as a lawyer.

The regulator suspended Soophia Khan’s certificate of practice at Sophie Khan & Co Ltd, saying it was investigating allegations of dishonesty and not following its rules and regulations.

While investigating, he says Ms Khan cannot practice as a lawyer and cannot represent clients in court.

The SRA also took possession of all documents and money held by the company.

The SRA has the power to sanction lawyers or to fine them up to 2,000. If further action is necessary, it can take cases to the independent lawyers’ disciplinary tribunal which can impose unlimited fines and completely withdraw lawyers from the profession.

Ms Khan, whose firm is based at Portland House, Portland Towers, Leicester, specializes in complaints against police and state bodies, investigations and human rights issues.

She said she was shocked to learn that the SRA was investigating her following what she said was an allegation from another law firm.

She told BusinessLive: It shocked me a bit that they were even investigating me because I had not been notified.

Obviously, there is always some correspondence that you have with your regulator but there is no basis.

I don’t have a problem with investigations, but investigate this damn thing, take my account.

There are two cases pending in the courts, relating to what they did, so I told them there was an appeal pending and an application in court.

If I am successful in these apps, it sets aside everything they say I did.

Ms Khan said she was able to transfer her business to another company she ran as a charity called Just for Public Ltd, which supports human rights – which she said she intended to do so at a later date.

She said she had two directors.

She said: I am in favor of regulation and have served on the equality, diversity and inclusion committee of the ARS.

But what I’m against is the way the SRA regulates. They don’t regulate properly. They do not regulate in a proportionate way. These are just flaming guns.

When asked about the issue of dishonesty, she said that these were the two claims before the courts, one relating to the SRA, the other to another case and she felt that it was up to the courts of decide before the SRA acts.

She said: I didn’t know anything about what was going on behind the scenes.

All I knew was that there had been a connection. Very good, very good, but this matter is before the courts.

Ms Khan said that in fighting the SRA, she had just created a new organization, the Sophie Center, which she said provided a forum for resolving disputes in civil rights cases.

The SRA said it was investigating the issues to see if further action was needed, but could not release details of the allegations.

He said: An intervention means that the SRA has closed a business with immediate effect.

He will prevent the business from operating, take possession of all documents and papers held by the business, and take possession of all money held by the business (including customers’ money).

It is not responsible towards the employees or the commercial creditors of the companies in which it has intervened.

The SRA has appointed an agent to handle all matters currently held by Sophie Khan & Co Ltd. The agent will assess all open questions and deal with the ones that need it most first.

The SRA archives team will take control of all documents held by the firm.

He said any client of Sophie Khan & Co Ltd who needed assistance could contact Gordons LLP’s agent, John Owen, for advice.
