People quickly get angry and attack the government for things they don’t like. But the government, which provides a structural framework, is not the problem. Neither does the Constitution, which brilliantly sets out the principles of social conscience and equal rights.

Put the blame where it belongs, on Republican politicians who broke their oath to support the Constitution. For decades, they fostered an anti-government stance to create a wave of suspicious and rebellious sentiments in a direct attack on the constitutional principles of citizen responsibility and accountability.

Republicans know people complain about “this is a free country” and assume the laws are troublesome offenses. They therefore used a deceptively simplistic interpretation of the Bill of Rights to launch the battle cry of “personal rights”; especially during COVID. Their position conveniently ignores the constitutional duty of social cooperation in the best interest of our country. (Perversely, they then ignore the constitutional separation of church and state to deny women “personal rights” regarding abortion.)

The government, President Joe Biden and the Democrats are the ones who maintain a clear understanding of constitutional principles. You might not like the idea of ​​having to make compromises to accommodate public health, safety guidelines, or equal rights for all citizens. But if you value America’s ideals of unity and sacrifice over your personal agenda, you would support our constitutional government and the politicians who truly honor it.

Do not point the finger at the government. Direct your critics where they belong: one, to the Republicans who threaten the integrity of our Constitution by telling people that there should be no restrictions on their personal freedoms; while hypocritically trying to take away the rights of women and voters in non-republican constituencies; and two, to self-defense “freedom fighters” who think they are patriotically defending our Constitution while blatantly undermining its basic principles.
