Ohio State falters in home opener against Oregon, 35-28, for Ryan Day’s first regular-season loss as head coach

Here’s a detailed breakdown of everything Day and the company said after the loss.

Ryan Day Day thanks the Buckeye crowd and everyone for coming. “It was a game we never really had control over.” Day says Oregon directed the ball and the Buckeyes couldn’t really run the ball. Day said the Buckeyes were still “playing catch” on Saturday. Regarding Josh Proctor’s injury, Day said it doesn’t look good on the pitch. Day says he’s praying for Proctor. On the tension with Coombs on the sidelines, Day says it was just fireworks. Day says the defense got stronger and had late saves. “There is enough blame to go around here.” Day said the Ohio state offensive looked “out of whack” on Saturday and cited failure to convert in the Fourth Downs as a setback. Day says the offense was unbalanced given the number of passes. Where is Day with Kerry Coombs as coordinator? “At the end of the day, it comes back to me, I’m the head coach.” “Is it the staff, is it the diet or is it the coaching?” »Day on defensive struggles. “When you go through adversity, you learn a lot about your team, you learn a lot about your leadership.” Day says that at times like this there’s a lot of “finger pointing” going on. “It’s not fatal, but it sure hurts.” What is the defense of the state of Ohio currently taking its hat off? Day says eliminating the big plays is the goal of this style of defense, but Oregon managed to make a few on Saturday. “We are not performing.” On the defense’s most glaring mistake, Day said the perimeter running game Oregon has run repeatedly is a problem. During the potential targeting call, Day said referees told him Sewell turned his head at the last moment. “It didn’t sound like me.” QB CJ Stroud Stroud said anytime the Buckeyes cross the 50-yard line in the first half, they can’t put the ball in the end zone. “Our game plan is still strong.” Stroud is not questioning the appeal of the coaching staff. Stroud said he felt very comfortable today and that being at home was “much better than being on the road.” During a late interception, Stroud said, “I just have to put it on him. It’s that simple. It’s what it is.” Stroud said he had gashes and bruises ahead of Saturday’s game. Haskell Garrett told Stroud after the game that “the season is not over” and the team cannot start pointing fingers. On Stroud’s shoulder he said “I was healthy enough to play.” Stroud said Williams and Henderson did a great job as running backs today, but the attack didn’t get some of the holes they expected in the running game. Thayer Munford, Teradja Mitchell, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Haskell Garrett Munford says Oregon hasn’t thrown at them anything they’ve never seen before. On the hold call that blocked Buckeye’s late practice: “I can’t get myself in a bad position. … I put myself in a horrible position.” Munford said he couldn’t stand it. Mitchell said the Buckeyes need to work on defensive runs. Smith-Njigba says Stroud has a big heart and is a great competitor. Said the coaches stayed tuned early to say the balls would eventually get to him after not seeing many targets early on. Mitchell says he feels a “huge responsibility” to lead the team and get them back on track after the loss. Haskell Garrett says Oregon QB Anthony Brown did a good job getting the ball back quickly. Garrett said “no one should bow their heads” after the loss. Garrett says “we did it in ’14, we can do it in 2021”. Mitchell says post-snap communication was an issue for the Buckeye defense. After a big game in the loss, Smith-Njigba says it’s hard to celebrate your individual game in a tough loss. “It feels good, but I want to win. I’m ready for next week and the rest of the season.”
