Former wicket keeper and Indian batsman Farokh Engineer has said captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri cannot be blamed for attending the latter’s book launch. Shastri’s book, titled ‘Stargazing: The Players in My Life’, had a launch event on August 31 in London, two days before the start of the fourth test at The Oval.

“People blame Ravi Shastri for this. He has done wonders for Indian cricket. He did a lot… Ravi and Virat both. You can’t blame them for going to a book launch. They did not leave the hotel; they were inside. It’s very easy to blame someone, to identify someone, ”Engineer said in an interview with Sports Tak.

Kohli, along with members of the Indian team, attended the event. But five days later, Shastri tested positive for Covid-19 with bowling coach Bharat Arun and field coach R Sridhar after day four of the fourth test. With the fifth England-India test in Manchester canceled on Friday after fears of a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp as second physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar tested positive, the blame game began with of people pointing at Shastri and Kohli attending the event.

“People keep coming to us for a selfie, and all the time you can’t say no. Ravi and Virat must have done the same, or shake people’s hands. But how would they know if someone is positive for Covid? So you can’t really blame Ravi and Virat even though I think a lot of the blame is on him, ”added the engineer.

The engineer was left baffled by conflicting reports in the media about the Indian team’s availability for the fifth test. “This is great news but also disappointing news. But to be honest, I don’t know what’s going on because we’re getting conflicting reports. On the one hand, I hear that all 11 Indian players are fit to play, while in England reports say the Indian team have said they cannot enter the pitch. Therefore, they asked the ECB to cancel the game. “

“But other than everything else it’s disappointing as we were looking forward to beat England again convincingly and win 3-1. But unfortunately that won’t happen. I don’t know what’s going on. . Everyone is in the dark. I’m sorry I couldn’t give you more information. I’d like to know, “the engineer concluded.
