For the most part, critics disagreed with the game’s main storyline. At IGN, Purslow liked it so much that he called it “an intricately constructed clockwork machine that … roars with confidence.” PC Gamer’s Phil Savage praised the looping mechanism, saying it “leads to a more organic sense of discovery” which is perfect for an “immersive simulation” like “Deathloop.”
However, others have made these points. Leo Faierman argued that for a game that is all about discovering information, “Deathloop” doesn’t allow you to do much by finding out he’s holding your hand. Coupled with the seemingly endless loops, some reviewers found the game to be lacking.
Despite these conflicting thoughts on the “Deathloop” campaign, critics have almost unanimously praised the multiplayer system. In the game, online players can randomly appear in your world to hunt you down as Julianna, a main boss. They have many tools at their disposal, including the ability to look like any NPC in the game. Kirk McKeand said the “evil thrill” of stalking players while Julianna “never gets old.” This skyrockets the replayability of the game.
