Badminton president denies allegations against him

Evans Yeboah, President, Ghana Badminton Association

Evans Yeboah, president of the Ghana Badminton Association (BAG) has refuted the allegations made against him by some of the country’s badminton players.

A section of badminton players held a press conference to accuse the president of the Association of wrongdoing, however, in an interview with GNA Sports, Mr Yeboah refuted the allegations saying they are not true.

The aggrieved players claimed the president hijacked the Association, adding that his term expired in April 2021.

We did not hijack the Association as some of these players claim. There are rules and regulations that guide the Association and that is where we get our powers.

He stated that the injured players of their respective clubs were not members in good standing under the rules and regulations set out in the BAG Constitution.

According to the president, out of the 48 clubs in the country, the players accusing him came from three clubs and that in the past four years none of the players from the three clubs have attended general meetings because they are not in order.

Mr. Yeboah explained that if you are not in good standing you cannot be invited to an Annual General Meeting (AGM) and that is according to the constitution of the BAG.

As a member of BAG, you must pay your membership fee to be a member. For example, during our last General Assembly held in November 2020, these people wrote to us that they could not come because they are not in good standing.

On behalf of BAG, said the president, the Association audited its account by an external auditor who was presented to the assembly at their last AGM held last year.

Commenting on the suspension issues of some domestic players, he said it was an act of indiscipline which called for the suspension of players through a report and recommendations from the BAG Discipline Committee.

These suspended athletes behaved badly at tournaments in 2017, 2018, 2019, and they were referred to an independent discipline committee which recommended they be suspended to deter others.

Before their suspension, they were invited to the hearing of the Disciplinary Commissions, some of which honored the invitations and others not. They received reminders for their audition, but they did not attend.

So for us we are only making the structures of BAG work and for any member who is aggrieved he or she should go to the dispute resolution committee and the appeals committee to have their issues resolved. He added.

He pointed out that the administrations’ current term ends in October 2021 and hints that the electoral guidelines will be published during the third week of September.
