MSP investigates domestic violence allegation against lawmaker

State representative Steve Marino was removed from his committee duties.

It was then that the Michigan State Police investigated threats he allegedly made against another lawmaker, Representative Mari Manoogian.

State police confirmed an investigation into allegations of domestic violence, but provided no further details.

Manoogian, a Democrat from Birmingham, issued this statement:

None of us are immune to a volatile relationship, no matter what our career. It can happen right here in our legislature, where abuse of power and threats to ruin a colleague’s reputation, as well as threats of public humiliation, can be used to intimidate other members of the legislature. I ask for privacy as I take steps to keep myself safe while continuing to represent my district and do people’s jobs.

The decision to remove Marino from two committees was made by House Speaker Jason Wentworth.

Wentworth released this statement:

I will always prioritize the safety of state lawmakers and those who serve their communities on the State Capitol. Once I learned of this situation, I took immediate action. Going forward, the House will honor Representative Manoogian’s request for confidentiality while others examine the allegations.

The Chamber will continue to assist in the Michigan State Police investigation, take every precaution to ensure the safety of Representative Manoogian, and ultimately allow the legal process to unfold. We will be able to provide further updates at the appropriate time.

Marino, a Macomb County Republican, chaired the House Trade and Tourism Committee before losing the hammer, and was also removed from the Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee.
