Gavin Cowan blames Telford Cup exit

Gavin Cowan the head coach / manager of AFC Telford United (AMA)

The Bucks lost 2-1 to Stamford on Saturday and Cowan said: The players are extremely disappointed and it was a disappointing performance. I obviously take full responsibility for it. Credit to Stamford; they were the best team today and they fully deserved the result.

The visitors, from two divisions below the Premier League Northern Premier League Bucks, shed light on the status gap; Two Cosmos Matwasa first-half goals rocked Cowans Bucks, and although Elliott Durrell reduced the deficit with a second-half penalty, Stamford held on to produce a Cup upset.

When asked where he thinks the flaws lie in the Bucks’ performance, Cowan added: It’s the FA Cup. How many times have managers been a little puzzled as to why their teams haven’t performed better and delivered against opponents in the lower league? We have tried to prepare as well as possible, but I also have to look at myself in terms of team motivation. I always try to watch myself, and I obviously wasn’t good enough to motivate them. We should beat them every day of the week, but I have to look at myself and decide how I am going to move forward.
