Bad mentality to blame for dirty drains in Ipoh

[ad_1]

As the monsoon season approaches, residents of Ipoh are worried about the possibility of flash floods during downpours from drains clogged with garbage.

They are also concerned that these drains will become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and attract pests like rats and cockroaches, causing disease.

A retiree, who wished to be known only as Luly, said several drains in Taman Ipoh were filled with food waste and empty food packaging.

There is a large food court where I often find garbage dumped in the sewers.

The Ipoh City Council (MBI) provided a large trash can a few meters away, but the trash still ends up in the sewers.

My sisters’ house is a stone’s throw away and flash floods occur whenever there is a downpour, she said, adding that the public should be more responsible in handling their waste.

Luly said the problem was not as widespread near his living area in Tambun.

I think part of the problem is the mentality of the people.

The Ipoh City Council (MBI) should not always be blamed for such problems.

It’s time for people to be more responsible and keep their surroundings clean, she added.

Taman Cempaka restaurant owner Wan Nor Syilawati Wan Amiruddin, 44, said people from a nearby store also dumped garbage in the backyard sewers.

We dare not open the back door because the stench is unbearable.

We spoke to the owner of the premises, but our complaints were ignored and food waste continues to be dumped in the sewers.

Wan Nor Syilawati said MBI should not be blamed because its contractors have done a good job cleaning and cleaning up the garbage drains.

Since May, I haven’t been able to go to my restaurant but I have a few workers there, she said, adding that they would complain to her about the stench.

They said the smell is still there. Honestly, we don’t know what else we can do, she added.

A trader, who only wished to be known as Liew, said he noticed several sewers in the town that were filled with plastic waste.

These are usually the drains behind stores or along quiet alleys.

I think if the drain is located along the main road or where the public notices it, it would be less likely for people to throw garbage indiscriminately.

He added that a particular drain in an alley near a restaurant on Jalan Russel was often littered with plastic bags, cigarette butts and glass bottles.

Liew believes that the homeless people receiving food assistance may have littered the place with food, plastic bags and packing materials.

Dapur Jalanan Ipoh co-founder Zeti Suhaila Mustapha said homeless people were ordered not to throw food and packaging indiscriminately.

Whenever we have a distribution, we remind them not to throw litter, but some do anyway.

We usually picked up all the trash and thrown it in the trash, she said, adding that they distributed food to the needy in Jalan Russel and Jalan CM Yusuff.

After several weeks of distributing food in the neighborhood, we noticed that the city council had cleaned up the garbage in Jalan CM Yusuff.

A few weeks ago we had a meeting with city council about this and they offered to provide more trash cans, she said.

A StarMetro check found the city’s drains were mostly clogged with plastic waste and dried leaves.

When contacted, an MBI spokesperson said there was a schedule for cleaning the drains.

For example, Jalan Russel is located in the city, so the garbage collection takes place every day while in Ipoh Garden, the garbage is collected three times a week.

We will also be launching a 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) program, he said.

The spokesperson added that between January and August of this year, the city council imposed fines totaling over RM 380,000 for rubbish.

This was less than last year, when fines were RM 772,850 between January and December.

Premises owners should prepare their own bins as our services only cover garbage collection, he said, calling on traders and customers to play their part in keeping their premises and the city clean. .
