British police said on Monday they would take no further action after examining evidence relating to allegations of sex crimes against Queen Elizabeth’s son Prince Andrew and late US financier Jeffrey Epstein. London Police Chief Cressida Dick said in August that detectives would look into the allegations for the third time, although they would not open an investigation after Virginia Giuffre filed a complaint in the United States accusing the the prince of sexual assault, which he has always denied.
She said at the time that “no one is above the law”. “As part of the proceedings, agents from the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) have reviewed a document released in August 2021 as part of a US civil action,” police said in a statement Monday. “This review is complete and we are not taking any further action.”
In her civil lawsuit, Giuffre, 38, accused Andrew of forcing her to have sex when she was underage at the London home of Epstein’s longtime partner Ghislaine Maxwell. She also said that Andrew, 61, abused her at Epstein’s mansion in Manhattan and on Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands.
The British royal, the ninth in line to the throne, has always denied these claims or having had any relationship with Giuffre. He was forced to step down from royal duties due to his friendship with Epstein, who committed suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 on charges of sex trafficking.
The Sunday Times reported this week that London police spoke to Giuffre about his allegations. “The Metropolitan Police Department continues to liaise with other law enforcement agencies investigating matters related to Jeffrey Epstein,” police said in their statement.
Last week, lawyers for Andrew, the Queen’s second son, were allowed to review a confidential 2009 deal between Epstein and Giuffre which they hope will clear him of any responsibility in the case.
