Vancouver –
Police seized 174 guns from a home in Vancouver’s Fairview neighborhood, alleging they were not stored properly.
Vancouver Police Department officers and staff from Vancouver Coastal Health attended the man’s home on Granville Street and West 15th Avenue on October 9 to check on his health.
(They went) to monitor a 76-year-old man at the behest of his doctor, a statement from the Const. Tania Visintin.
The man suffers from dementia and other physical health problems, she continued.
Inside his house, they discovered a mine of weapons.
The man had more than 170 firearms, most of which were vintage and from World War II, Visintin said.
The firearms were all seized because they were not stored safely.
Deputy Chief Fiona Wilson took to Twitter to comment on the events.
Not all VPD calls involve a crime, she said.
(Our officers) recovered 174 guns from an elder on the west side after visiting his home for a welfare check.
Wilson said the man’s physical and mental health was in decline, so officers took him to hospital for emergency treatment. Visintin clarified that he had to see a psychiatrist, but did not say whether physical force was used in the process.
