Critics Choice Awards promise to keep Jan 9 date and CW telecast despite ‘hostile’ Golden Globes struggling move for exactly the same night – deadline

Deadline

For those who may have speculated that the Critics Choice Association would move the long-planned 2022 Critics Choice Awards date to Sunday, January 9 after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on Friday announced plans to present its 79th Golden Globe Awards on the same Friday. evening, well, think again.

In an email to the 500+ members of the Critics Choice Association today, CEO Joey Berlin reinforced the organization’s intention to stick to that date, noting that with the exception of the 2021 awards affected by COVID-19, the group regularly did their national television (now on The CW) show on the second Sunday in January.

There had been rumors in recent weeks that the HFPA, whose 2022 telecast had been canceled by NBC and abandoned by its producer, Dick Clark Productions, was going to attempt to present the Golden Globes in one form or another anyway. even though it wasn’t televised. Speculation led to some sort of press conference in the Beverly Hilton Ballroom, where the event still takes place. But yesterday’s announcement did not specify anything other than that their “presentation” would take place on January 9, the same date the CCA announced for their show in a May 12 press release.

In a letter to publicists from new president Helen Hoehne and interim CEO Todd Boehly obtained by Deadline (Boehly’s company Eldridge includes Dick Clark Productions among its assets) who also announced their previously undeclared intention to move from up front and present their prices, they just said they “are still evaluating and determining the details of the evening”. In other words, stay tuned (but apparently not on NBC, if the network sticks to its guns and won’t consider airing the Globes until 2023 at the earliest).

Golden Globes Awards

The HFPA has, of course, been embroiled in a scandal over its previous restrictive membership policies, among others, including controversial member compensation, as first detailed in a February 21 LA Times article on group practices.

Under heavy pressure and a boycott from publicists, and stars like Tom Cruise publicly swearing to surrender their Golden Globes, the HFPA has since been immersed in an attempt to reform the group’s statutes and diversify membership (as pointed out the LAT survey, there were no black members), while “examining” the current members as legitimate journalists covering the entertainment industry.

Berlin, in his memo to members (full disclosure: I am a long-time member and have also regularly covered the Globes and the HFPA as an entertainment reporter over the decades) said: “The purpose of this memo is to reassure every CCA member that our 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards will be our biggest and best yet, and can only be helped by this hostile announcement of the new leadership of this other group. If appropriate, I encourage you to share the gist of this post with your viewers, listeners, readers, and subscribers, the louder the better. Our friends in the industry understand all of the above, but it would be great if the general public knew too. “

Critics’ Choice Award

The CCA CEO did not hold back, but in fact pointed out that he felt that “the scandalous decision by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a plus for the Critics Choice Awards. “I think this desperate decision by the HFPA to try to undermine the Critics Choice Awards and the tremendous support we get from all the major studios, networks and streamers is… really good for us! For years, we’ve tried to compare the tainted HFPA to the legitimate Critics Choice Association – which has five times the membership and doesn’t stink. Our awards are the thoughtful judgment of nearly 500 active critics and entertainment journalists who cover film and television and collectively reach virtually every entertainment consumer in the United States and Canada every day, ”he wrote.

How this whole brewing battle will play out on January 9 is a big question. But it certainly increases the drama and will put the nominees and potential winners in a sticky position if they have any dueling award shows to deal with, as well as the publicists who have vowed not to cooperate with the HFPA until they do. ‘they are convinced that their house is in order. As they say in the trade: to be continued.

Here is the full memo to members of the Critics Choice Association:

To members,

Perhaps you’ve seen the scandal-plagued Hollywood Foreign Press Association Friday afternoon junkyard announce that they are planning to present the Golden Globes on the same day that we present the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards at the historic Fairmont Century Plaza. This comes despite the fact that we announced the date of our show in May – and the fact that we have presented our awards on the second Sunday in January for several years in a row (not counting last year, when COVID pushed everyone back a few. months).

The purpose of this memo is to reassure every CCA member that our 27th annual Critics Choice Awards will be our biggest and best yet and can only be helped by this hostile announcement of the new leadership of this other group. If appropriate, I encourage you to share the gist of this post with your viewers, listeners, readers, and subscribers, the louder the better. Our friends in the industry understand all of the above, but it would be great if the general public knew too.

I think this desperate decision by the HFPA to try to undermine the Critics Choice Awards and the tremendous support we get from all the major studios, networks and streamers is… really good for us! For years, we’ve tried to compare the tainted HFPA to the legitimate Critics Choice Association – which has five times the membership and doesn’t stink. Our awards are the thoughtful judgment of nearly 500 active critics and entertainment journalists who cover film and television and collectively reach virtually every entertainment consumer in the United States and Canada every day. While the CCA proudly lists and displays photos of all of its members on our website, the HFPA has long hidden its tiny members. Only now is he trying to come out on top after being very publicly dishonored for his prejudices, rudeness, and highly questionable business practices. So, yes, let’s make these comparisons!

In fact, in your desperate search for new legitimate members, some of you have been approached to join them. From their perspective, that makes sense. After all, CCA members are already vetted and have proven to be respected critics and journalists.

From our perspective, we feel bad for the members of the HFPA who are legitimate members of the foreign press and suffer that so many companies have chosen to stop working with them. We are even more sympathetic to the many members of the foreign press who have been unwanted in the HFPA for decades, despite the fact that their collective reach is probably greater than the 80 or so members of the HFPA who ostracized them when. ‘they applied for membership. . This is why the CCA created its new international branch, to accredit important and influential members of the foreign entertainment press who were unable to join the HFPA.

And please note that while this other group is dedicated entirely to its one major TV show (and the distribution of the wealth it has generated), the CCA has long been a diverse and inclusive organization that is true to our mission all. throughout the year – helping audiences find the right things, and helping people who do the right things find their audience. That’s why we’re presenting the Critics Choice Documentary Awards on November 14, and why we’re hosting the Celebration of Black Cinema & Television on December 6 and the Celebration of Latino Cinema on December 9, along with our other Critics Choice events.

Forward and up!
