Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he loves criticism

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed he enjoys criticism as the pressure on him continues, insisting it is just another person’s opinion.

Solskjaer survived the sacking following United’s 5-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend and took the first step towards saving his job with a 3-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

The United boss was pleased with his players’ reaction and is now looking for the next step to develop some consistency as he prepares for Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting with Atalanta.

Solskjaer explained that the outcome of the Liverpool disaster brought the club closer together in a sort of siege mentality.

“We don’t have time for anyone to sulk, if you are not in the starting XI you are there to support your teammates,” he said.

“The attitude [against Tottenham] was there. Players want to play [and] no one is happy when they don’t. It is the team before any individual. We know that when we get consistency, we will get results. A shallow do not do the spring. [Atalanta] is a chance to prove that we can go back.

In the face of criticism, he added, “Criticism can make you doubt yourself or you can defend yourself. I always enjoyed it, keep it up. Journalists, experts, experts… we all have different jobs and it’s up to them to give their opinion. I am not here to fight with anyone.

United narrowly beat Atalanta in the return leg at Old Trafford last month after making a second-half comeback. The win, whatever the circumstances, put the club in a good position, with another win this week making it likely to qualify for the round of 16.

It will be a challenge though, especially after what happened the last time around.

“Atalanta has a special way of playing. High pace, aggressive, offensive and positive. What they have done is remarkable. A very good club, with very good people, ”said Solskjaer.

“We are in a good position [in the group] after winning our home games [against Villarreal and Atalanta] but we also need a result. All the focus on this one. We didn’t think about it [the Manchester derby] at all.”
