Despite being only 29 years old, based on his stats and missed games due to injuries in recent seasons, Odell Beckham Jr. could be in the twilight of his career. Over six games this season, OBJ is averaging the fewest yards per game, fewest receptions per game, lowest catch rate, fewest yards per target and is yet to hit the end zone.
Beckham still has the ability to find space in zones and break away from defensive backs on deep roads, but Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has always been unable to find Beckham on those roads. Obviously, Beckham became frustrated with Mayfield and was let down by the Browns. After being unclaimed on waivers, Beckham is a free agent and has made it known which teams he wants to join.
The Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints are Beckham’s favorite destinations. While the Seahawks and Patriots have expressed interest in the triple Pro Bowler, Beckham has not listed them among the teams he would like to sign with.
The first thing I thought when I saw this list was “Would Beckham at the Packers really be a good thing?” Throughout his career, Beckham didn’t get along with his quarterbacks when they weren’t looking in his direction. With the Giants, he called Eli Manning when the team started 1-3 in 2018. With the Browns, obviously, Beckham and his father pursued former Heisman winner Baker Mayfield in an attempt to get him out of Cleveland. .
While his relationship with each new quarterback always begins with all love-dovey and hunky-dory, the honeymoon phase fades when the team struggles to win or Beckham struggles to flaunt numbers. Pro Bowl caliber.

When Beckham joined the Giants and Browns, he was immediately propelled into the No.1 catcher role with those teams. He won’t have that luxury if he signs with Green Bay. Davante Adams is Rodgers’ best option in the passing game, and will be for the foreseeable future. If Beckham doesn’t see the targets he wants from the start, he could experience a shorter honeymoon phase than with the Browns or Giants. Not to mention, Rodgers is a pretty stubborn guy, and I’m not even talking about the COVID stuff. Have you forgotten how he held the Packers by the neck this offseason? If Rodgers doesn’t get what he wants, then all hell breaks loose. Every wide receiver Rodgers has ever had (aside from this time Greg Jennings spoke about retired Rodgers) has understood that Rodgers is the man in charge. He won three MVPs and a Super Bowl, while making the Packers fans forget about Brett Favre. It’s his way or the highway. Beckham probably wouldn’t fall into that mold, which would make his relationship with Rodgers all the more likely to end early.
As for the Chiefs, with all the drops Patrick Mahomes has had to endure this season, it makes sense that Kansas City is in the market for a capable number two option on the road. Beckham would likely fit right into the system right away and, at the very least, fill a similar role as Sammy Watkins during his final seasons at Arrowhead. That being said, while the drops have certainly been a problem for the Chiefs offense, Mahomes’ decision making hasn’t helped either. Mahomes has always forced shots this season, whether they’re on cover or while being dragged to the ground by a defender. While Mahomes had gotten away with many of these decisions in his early seasons, his luck seems to catch up with him in 2021.
While adding Beckham to the Chiefs roster wouldn’t help Mahomes’ decision-making, Beckham’s ability to open up out of the line of scrimmage would open up more opportunities for short passes and reads to midfield making Mahomes ‘job much easier and limiting Mahomes’ opportunities to make bad decisions. The only problem is that Beckham doesn’t like to take short trips. Speaking of Eli Manning in 2018, Beckham said:
“Can [Manning] I run it again, yeah, but it’s been pretty safe and it’s been, you know … cool to grab some shallow (roads) and try to take it home. But I am, you know, I want to pass someone. How come we don’t try or try to throw the ball more than 20 yards? “
Beckham won’t have nearly the same opportunity to go deep in Kansas City as in Cleveland. Deep lanes are Tyreek Hill’s specialty, and as great as Beckham is, he’s not Tyreek Hill. Not to mention the fact that of the three teams listed by Beckham, the Chiefs are the most in trouble. Therefore, if the Chiefs don’t start winning after acquiring Beckham and Beckham doesn’t see the kind of targets he wants, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Beckham enjoys his time in Kansas City. It’s likely that Beckham and Andy Reid’s relationship would end in the same way that Le’Veon Bell left the team.
The Saints mean the most to Beckham. Not only is Sean Payton a trainer known for dealing with tough personalities, the Saints also urgently need someone with Beckham’s skills. Beckham is most effective as a mid to deep track runner. While Marquez Callaway already fills that role for the Saints, he doesn’t have the same efficiency as Beckham on these roads.
Quarterback Taysom Hill limits Beckham’s ceiling, but the Saints have shown they don’t need an elite quarterback to play solid football. Beckham could join the roster and immediately be the best pass option. Even in a team that probably won’t pass the ball much, Beckham would likely still see an absurdly high target share and be the deepest threat on the roster. Add the fact that the Saints will likely make the playoffs and Michael Thomas ended the season with an ankle injury, and I see no reason Beckham wouldn’t fit in the New Orleans offense. .
If Beckham can find the right system, he can thrive. Beckham has maintained an elite ability to find weak spots in area coverage, which is a useful skill in every NFL system. Much like Randy Moss after joining the Patriots in 2007, Beckham could find new life under the right circumstances.
In fact, Beckham’s career with the Browns and Moss’s with the Raiders are pretty similar. The two have played 29 games with their teams. Moss had 219 targets; Beckham had 210. Moss had 102 receptions; Beckham had 114. Moss had 1,558 receiving yards; Beckham had 1,586. Moss (11 TDs with Oakland) found the end zone more often than Beckham (seven TDs with Cleveland), but the similarities are still there.
Many people thought Moss was stranded when he made his way to Foxborough. Everything he did in his first season there was arguably the best receiving season ever. I’m not saying Beckham is as talented as Randy Moss, but they were both 29 when they left their teams and their numbers are eerily similar. Beckham still has plenty in the tank. Don’t count it yet.
