EDITORIAL: The fault lies with the media for continually distorting the issue – and, even more so, with Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and other prominent Catholic politicians who continue to scandalize the faithful with their Eucharistically inconsistent support for legal abortion.
The American bishops will meet November 15-18 in Baltimore for their annual fall meeting. There, it is virtually certain that the issue of Catholic politicians who promote the right to abortion and also insist on receiving Communion will once again dominate secular media coverage of their discussions. Editor-in-Chief Lauretta Brown provided an overview of the meeting.
Yet it is not the bishops who are forcing the debate on this issue in the assembly. The problem was generated by the stubborn refusal of these wayward politicians to reform their conscience and repent of their support for the evil of abortion – a scourge that has been responsible for the deaths of over 60 million innocent unborn babies. in the half-century since abortion was legalized in the United States.
Moreover, as has been documented repeatedly in these pages during this year, it is impossible to avoid the question in light of the actions of the country’s two most prominent Catholic politicians, President Joe Biden and President of the Nancy Chamber. Pelosi.
Since Biden became president in January, aided and abetted by Pelosi’s actions in Congress, he has sought to advance the Democratic Party’s current abortion agenda, which is by far the most extreme expansion in the world. so called abortion right in our nation history.
Neither Biden nor Pelosi had the slightest qualms about continuing to present themselves as pious Catholics attending Mass, despite their deep political break with Church teaching on what the American bishops call “the matter. preeminent moral of our time “. In October, the two politicians were keen to travel to Rome to meet with Pope Francis to display their Catholic credentials, highlighting areas where their political outlook aligns with those of the Church, while avoiding media efforts. faithful Catholics to question them on why they ignore the Holy Father’s repeated characterizations of abortion as a form of murder.
Obviously, by their own actions, Biden and Pelosi – as well as other American Catholic politicians who are similarly pushing for the advancement of legal abortion and yet come forward for communion – are forcing our bishops to remedy the situation. their lack of Eucharistic coherence. This is why the bishops’ conference reopened the discussion.
The secular media continue to circulate the duck that it is the bishops who are “obsessed” with the issue, when it is obvious to anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear that it is the fault of these. Catholics in public life who have placed themselves so blatantly outside of communion with what their Church proclaims about the sanctity of life, which includes the unborn child.
The truth is that the bishops are only planning to include a relatively small element dealing with the dignity of receiving Holy Communion in a new document on the Eucharist to be debated and then voted on in Baltimore. The document is titled “The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church,” and it was developed by the USCCB Doctrine Committee in conjunction with the Evangelism Committee’s proposal to initiate a Eucharistic Awakening. three-year national.
During the assembly, the bishops will also vote on revival plans. It is an initiative that is urgently needed, in light of recent polls which show that a majority of American Catholics have major misunderstandings about this central sacrament of our faith.
As always, there are a number of other important proposals from the USCCB that the Bishops will discuss, including an update to their “Guidelines for Socially Responsible Investment”; a discussion on the implementation of the “Walking with Moms in Need” initiative of the Committee for Pro-Life Activities, which aims to mobilize parishes and dioceses on behalf of pregnant women who encounter difficulties in their pregnancies ; and a new pastoral framework for marriage and family ministry which is taken from the 2016 Pope’s Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). Given the scope of these discussions, it should be clear that bishops are responding constructively to a wide range of pastoral needs, not focusing solely on the issue of Catholic politicians and the reception of Communion.
Another lie that continues to be propagated by secular media that aligns with the abortion lobby is the claim that the bishops’ conference intends to rekindle the so-called “wafer wars” by informing local bishops that they are forced to refuse Communion for stubbornly pro – abortion public officials. In fact, there is virtually no chance of this happening; the discussion in June and a draft Eucharistic document made it clear that such actions will remain at the discretion of individual diocesan bishops.
In fact, the draft indicates that the American bishops will be less precise in their document than was the Aparecida document of the Latin American bishops of 2007, which was written under the direction of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires. He emphatically affirmed: “We must adhere to ‘Eucharistic coherence’, that is to say, be aware that they [i.e., legislators, heads of government and health professionals] cannot receive Holy Communion and at the same time act with deeds or words against the commandments, especially when abortion, euthanasia and other serious crimes against life and family are encouraged.
The point is, these politicians are the ones who must discipline themselves to stay away from the line of communion, as they can no longer have a legitimate excuse to insist that their “pro-choice” position is acceptably Catholic. .
It is perhaps too much to hope that such Catholic politicians will ever be swayed by a medical correction regarding their support for legal abortion. But don’t criticize bishops if the issue of receiving Communion overshadows other things on the Baltimore meeting agenda. The fault lies with the media for continually distorting the issue – and, even more so, to Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and other prominent Catholic politicians who continue to scandalize the faithful with their Eucharistically inconsistent support for legal abortion.
